FINAL MESSAGES FROM THE YEAR 12 STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM

From our 2024 Acacia Captains – Palak & Elmin:

As the year comes to a close and we finish our exams, we would like to thank you all for allowing us

to lead you this year as the 2024 Campus Captains. It truly has been a whirlwind of such a rewarding

experience and we will truly miss our time at Keysborough College. From organising events to

fostering school spirit, your support has made our time unforgettable. Whether it be leading

assemblies or working to connect with our younger peers, it has been a purposeful and exciting time

which we will cherish wholeheartedly.

To our teachers; thank you for your unwavering support and guidance. Your dedication and passion

for education have inspired us and shaped our experiences in ways we can’t fully express. Thank you

for believing in us and for encouraging us to strive to do our best. We've learned so much from you,

and we hope we’ve made you proud.

To all of our fellow students; we have been continuously inspired by your determination and

resilience. Your enthusiasm and involvement have made our school an environment of vibrance and

cheer, and we are grateful to have witnessed it throughout this year. We encourage you all to continue to get involved, share your voices, and take up all the opportunities available to you. In the words of Maya Angelou, “I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.”. We encourage you to embrace change and challenges as opportunities for growth and to always strive to be the best version of yourselves.

To the Campus Captains of 2025, Christina and Harry, as well as the future Student Executive and

House Leadership Team, we wish you good luck and trust you will do an excellent job leading

Keysborough College next year.

As we move forward into a new chapter of our lives, we will always carry the valuable lessons and

meaningful connections that we made with us. Though we are sad to say goodbye, we are excited for

what the future holds for us and for Keysborough College. We hope you all continue to follow the

school values of Respect, Excellence and Diversity as well the 5Ps because we believe you are all

capable of being leaders and role models every single day.

Thank you all for this opportunity and a wonderful year filled with growth and discovery. We have

been honoured to be your Campus Captains in 2024 and we wish you the best for all your future

endeavours!

From our 2024 Acacia Environment Captain – Elena:

I started this year with a lot of optimism and excitement for the projects I wanted to accomplish. But as I got the ball rolling, I realised schools are very slow moving entities. It was frustrating, but I’ve come to understand that students (like me) don’t always see the challenges schools face behind the scenes. In everyone’s lives, with the growing pressures of education, financial stress, and everyday obligations, it’s hard for people to engage. As disappointed as I was, I understand.

However, if you do have the time and space to engage with environmentalism, I urge you to do it with purpose and heart. It’s tempting to dip your toes in by recycling a few things or buying a reusable cup (which is good), but environmentalism is so much more than that. The environment extends past forests and deserts—it’s in our homes, our communities, and our parliaments . When you act, think bigger, think intersections. Focus on what will help our community, our systems, our societies rather than atomistic individual acts.

And remember, climate change is not your fault. It never was. The world we live in is designed to make us consume, not to make us live sustainably. Cities and entire countries are built for cars and industry, not for people and nature. That’s why it feels so difficult to make sustainable choices. Don’t carry the guilt for that. You can’t fix this on your own.

Instead, focus on collective action. Plant native species in forgotten spaces. Grow your own food where you can. Thrift or swap clothes. Repair and upcycle. Get involved in community gardens. Attend forums. Argue with your friends. Question popular environmental efforts, like is going vegan really going to save the world? There’s so much more to do than cutting out plastic straws.

Hands in the dirt. Revolution isn’t what you think it looks like. Suburbia can be an ecosystem again.

From our 2024 Acacia Visual & Performing Arts Captain – Stacey:

This year has been a wonderful experience being your Acacia campus Visual and Performing Arts Captain for 2024. I am so grateful for being able to contribute to our first Senior and first Junior play as well celebrate our national award for Wakakirri! It has been a pleasure and great honour to work alongside and watch all of you grow and I wish you all to continue contributing and supporting our arts programs in the coming future. Farewell Keysie!

From our 2024 Acacia Alumni Captain – Leksha:

With 2024 coming to an end, I want to acknowledge the progress made in building connections between our alumni and the school community. Thank you to all students, staff, and alumni who contributed to these efforts through alumni sessions. To the next leaders, I encourage you to continue maintaining these connections.

From our 2024 Acacia International Student Captain – Kimlong:

As an International Captain 2024, I am proud of how our international community has grown closer this year, from Cultural Week to our various smaller gatherings. We celebrated what keeps each person unique and started building a stronger and tighter school. To future leaders out there, keep this spirit alive: United and respected-that's what makes it so special. Thank you for all being open, supporting, and proud of yourselves. Let's take this energy with us moving into the new year!

From our 2024 Acacia Student Voice Captain – Lataiya:

I want to share some astounding and extremely proud achievements that I and the SRC have reached in the past year. I am so very proud at how we as a committee were able to incorporate Keysborough students' bright ideas and voices into our events, and change traditional ways of how the events are run and what is included in it. Many students may think these events are nothing but stalls and money - but it is about the community we built, new friendships made, team work that flourished and most importantly the charities/fundraisers that the students were able to help donate too.

Our target for Pyjama day was $500, but we were able to surpass and raise $750 to donate to the Melbourne City Mission supporting youth homelessness.

Our target was to raise enough money to donate to the Heart Foundation in Australia for Valentine’s Day. We raised approximately over $300 and received an official certificate from Heart Foundation of gratitude.

Our target was to make enough to donate, for Duo Day we raised just enough to be able to donate to Youth Mental Health Headspace.

I think that is beautiful, we as a community, a team, and some even in friendship - were able to come together and make this all happen. We are helping people from the inside, to out. As Student Voice Captain, it was an honour to work alongside my peers and teachers to create change at the school. To whoever chooses to be a leader, I want you to listen to some advice;

Stand strong for those around you and yourself. Always try your best to think outside the box and let your creativity flourish despite others thoughts about you. You stay kind in anger, be your most authentic self. Take care of yourself first before others. This role will help you flourish, work with others you've never worked with before and teach you skills and a new mindset that will help you in your journey growing up. Life can be fun, make it fun. Continue to help people and grow the Keysborough College Community. I believe in you and so do many others. "

From our 2024 Acacia Athena House Captains – Monica & Lachlann:

As we wrap up this year, we want to encourage all of you for our final events. We have supported each other and achieved a lot together, so let’s continue to give our best. All the events this year ran smoothly and it was a lot of fun! Remember to support one another as teammates, and most importantly have fun in everything you do - whether it is house activities or overall in life!  Staying positive and believing in ourselves and our team is essential. Let’s finish strong and show the true spirit of Athena! Thank you for your hard work and efforts to win first place! It was amazing being the leaders of the winning house!

From our 2024 Acacia Artemis House Captains – Monica & Lachlann:

It has been a privilege and great honour to be the 2024 Artemis House Captains this year. We have had some of the best times at this school not only this year, but throughout our high school education, participating in sport and always displaying our house spirit. We want to thank all of the students and teachers who have made these past 6 years a wonderful experience at such a great school. Throughout the year we have all participated in many great House events including Athletics day, Keysie’s Got Talent, Easter Egg Hunt and many more. We hope you all have enjoyed this year’s events and look forward to next year, as I am sure it will be just as enjoyable. Good luck to the 2025 House Captains and Leadership team! We believe that it is really important to uphold the school values and try your best at everything you do.

From our 2024 Acacia Apollo House Captains – Emma & Rina:

Hello everyone! It has been a privilege to be your 2024 Apollo House Captains. We are extremely grateful for all the memories made throughout the year, and we thank you for your participation in house events - you all have shown incredible house spirits! Each event was filled with laughter and excitement and we hope you enjoyed them as much as we did. As we approach the last few months of school, we truly wish everyone (mainly Apollos) every success in their studies, goals, and future endeavours. Let’s keep the energy up and push through! Go Apollo!

From our 2024 Acacia Poseidon House Captains – Aania & Kritish:

As the captains of Poseidon House this year, we reflect on an incredible journey filled with memorable house days that truly showcased our spirit. Athletics Day was a standout occasion, as our members showcased their talent and determination, cheering each other on and embodying the true essence of teamwork. Additionally, hosting Keysborough's Got Talent was a highlight, allowing us to celebrate the diverse skills of our peers in a fun and supportive environment. We were proud to lead our house in making every event a celebration of teamwork and friendship!

In attendance were student winners, parents and staff from Killester College, Nazareth College, Noble Park Secondary College, Carwatha P-12 College and Keysborough College. This annual award celebrates students in year 10 and 11 who are identified as all-rounders who excel in academics, extracurricular activities, and community service.

Acacia Campus Winner: Christina Wright

Christina Wright, a Year 11 student, is a shining example of leadership and dedication at Keysborough College. As the president of the school’s Interact Club, Christina has driven its most successful year yet, inspiring her peers with her organizational skills and inclusive leadership. Balancing her VCE studies, Christina also contributes to her family as a carer for her yiayia, works as a swim instructor while pursuing her AUSSWIM certification, and holds a weekend receptionist role at an optometrist.

Her contributions extend beyond work and school, as she volunteers at her Calisthenics club where she mentors and teaches younger students, and raises funds for their competitions. Earlier this year she helped raise donations to get the team to Queensland for their Gold Coast Cali Dance Eisteddfod. Christina's selflessness, kindness, and ability to balance her commitments are truly inspiring. Her recent appointment as a 2025 school captain further highlights her exemplary character and dedication to the school community.

Banksia Campus Winner: Jimmy Russell-Atai

Jimmy Russell-Atai exemplifies commitment to his faith, culture, and community. Active in his church, New Life AOG, and also a proud member of the Rarotongan Community Association, Jimmy participates in outreach programs, functions and assists in supporting local families and members of the community.

Jimmy’s passion for netball is unparalleled, with roles as a player, umpire, and mentor across multiple associations. Jimmy’s hard work has earned him a spot in the top 25 for the 17-and-under state boys' netball team, a testament to his athleticism and dedication. At school, Jimmy's charisma and leadership shine, whether helping classmates, representing Keysborough College as a student speaker, or leading his peers in the Wakakirri Dance Festival. His infectious positivity and unwavering commitment to all he undertakes inspires everyone around him.

Christina and Jimmy exemplify the values celebrated by the Arthur Williams Junior Citizenship Award. Their contributions to their school and wider communities are a source of pride and inspiration. Congratulations to both winners on this well-deserved recognition, and best wishes as you continue to make a positive impact on the world around you!

YEAR 7 BAND CONCERT

On Thursday 21st November, the Acacia Music Department had the privilege of hosting our end of Year 7 Band Concert for a full audience of parents, friends and staff.

Despite the very muggy weather, our Year 7 students came out in full force – we had roughly 150 students who performed on the night and 200 parents/family in the audience.

It was excellent to see the outstanding progress our students have made since their first concert back in May and it was commented frequently by attendees on the night that each band performed to a fine standard (no more theme and variations on ‘Hot Cross Buns’!).

We also had the pleasure of listening to the Acacia Intermediate Band led by Lynn Beardmore who performed ‘Welcome To the Jungle’ by Guns and Roses and ‘All I Want For Christmas’ by Mariah Carey.

VCE MUSIC 2 PERFORMANCE EVENING

On Friday 1st November 2024 many staff, family, friends and students had the pleasure of attending the VCE MUSIC UNIT 2 Performance Evening. They did a magnificent job performing their individual solo’s and their ensemble pieces.

The evening was held in Ricado’s Café where we enjoyed some supper while listening to our marvelous musicians.  A great time was had by all and a big CONGRATULATIONS to the VCE MUSIC class of 2024 for a terrific night.

LIBRARY NEWS

The 2024 Keysborough College Library Reading Challenge is now complete!!  Students who completed the Reading Challenge, and students who were nominated by their teachers as someone who has shown great commitment to their reading, received their prizes of goody bags, canteen vouchers, and, for those whose names were drawn out, gift vouchers!!

Congratulations to those students! Reading is important because it builds our vocabulary; it makes us better at writing and communicating, it improves our ability to think critically, and it actually makes our brain stronger! Not only that, reading reduces stress, and is lots of fun!

Please enjoy these photos of goody bags waiting to be collected, and some of our well-read Acacia students!

Didn’t get around to entering the Reading Challenge this year, but would like to join in the fun next year? Great decision. Keep an eye on the goings-on at your nearest library, and you will have your chance to enter.

Keep reading, everyone!

YEAR 10 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL – JUNIOR OPEN

In late November, Volleyball Victoria holds their annual Junior Open, where government and private schools can enter teams across a range of year levels to vie for the Gold medal in Division 1 or 2 Championships. Keysborough Banksia entered two teams this year, a Year 10 Girls team (made up of Year 8, 9 and 10 Girls) and a Year 9 Boys Team (made up of Year 8 and 9 Boys), both in Division 2 due to their relative inexperience.

The Year 10 Girls started the tournament playing against Division 1 teams – teams from schools that have extensive volleyball programs or resources. They started with a tight 2 sets to 1 loss against Billanook College followed by a 2 sets to 0 loss against Methodist Ladies College. Not a great start, but our girls, although nervous and lacking big match experience, acquitted themselves well against well-drilled teams. Our next two games were vastly different, with our girls gaining confidence in defence and a more positive approach towards attack. They beat Eltham 2 sets to 0 and then beat Altona in a tight affair, 2 sets to 1.

This meant that they qualified for the Division 2 semi-finals. In the semi-final against Nunawading Christian College, our girls played a dominant brand of Volleyball, desperately keeping the ball alive defensively and setting up attack after attack. The semi-final was book-ended by two excellent serving displays from our two Year 8 girls – Elina Chhor and Tamily Nguyen, who both turned close initial scorelines to comprehensive set wins, 25-11, 25-10.

This meant we were in the Gold Medal match, against Upwey SC. Upwey is a ‘volleyball’ school, having run volleyball programs for many years. Admittedly, on history and experience, it looked a difficult proposition. And they were also very tall. But, they didn’t have 2 ‘generals’ on the court like Erica Sor and Emily Chhor, organizing the team, covering the court to constantly defend and attack. They didn’t have our Libero, Irene Pham, who had improved so astonishingly that she was as reliable and solid as any player on the court. They didn’t have the super-setter, Angie Soeun, who grew so much over the three days with her placement and choice of sets. They didn’t have the attacking and serving abilities of Elina Chhor, or the attacking or blocking prowess of our ‘tall’, Natalie Kirifi-Taulapapa. They also didn’t have our super subs, Jelena Chhoung and Tamily Nguyen, who more often than not strengthened our team when they came on. And they didn’t have a student coach, Tim Nguyen, who sacrificed his time to impart his knowledge and guide our girls through their first, long and tiring Volleyball campaign.

And for these reasons, and these players, we won Gold, beating the very tall, experienced, well-drilled Upwey SC team 25-19, 25-17. What a team!  I really love this school and these kids.

Hi, my name is Nicole, I am the new Secondary School Nurse at Keysborough College  Acacia Campus. My role at the school includes providing students with individual health consultations, participating in health education classes and helping to run health promotion activities at the school. I am at the school every Thursday and Friday.

Students can refer themselves to see me by contacting their year level leaders or on the intranet by completing a self-referral to wellbeing. There are no silly questions and although I may not be able to help personally with absolutely everything, I will be happy and able to refer to someone who can!

Hope to see you around at Keysborough College!

RITEMAN MENTORING EXCURSIONS

Year 10 girls group:

At the start of Term 4, Rite Mentoring organised an excursion with a group of Year 10 students to the Australian Centre of Trauma and Wellness—with Chantelle and Alisha from Wellbeing and Ms. Barbour as attending staff—to experience a small part of equine therapy, including observing and meeting the horses, guiding them by leads, and having gentle physical contact with them. It was a brand-new experience for some of the girls, as well some of the staff, and it helped everyone gain insight on emotional regulation, community and mutual respect!

Year 9 boys group:

In term 4 Our year 9 Riteman boys went out on the end of year surf camp to Phillip Island the conditions at the start of the day were full of rain and hail, but the boys showed lots of perseverance by doing the beach activities and reflection in the rain. Once we got to YCW beach the weather turned clear and was perfect for surfing the boys all did really well with everyone getting involved and catching a wave, The surf instructor informed staff that they were the “best group of kids we have had all year” which goes to show how well the boys represented the school!

YEAR 8 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL – STATE CHAMPIONS

On November 13, our Year 8 Girls Volleyball team drove to the Dandenong stadium to play in the School Sport Victoria State Volleyball Championships, vying to become the first team from Banksia to win a State title since 2015.

Our first pool game was against Eltham SC, likely the team to beat due to their large Volleyball program. In a close tussle, our girls were able to scrape through with a 2 sets to 1 win. All indications were that, with that win, we should be able to progress through to the finals. But all indications were wrong. We struggled for cohesion in our game against Mildura and lost, meaning the match-up against Horsham would decide if we would go through to the semi-finals. Some great defensive and attacking play by the team saw us win 2 sets to 0, meaning three teams in Pool A finished on 2 wins and a loss. Banksia ended up finishing on top as we had a better set and points percentage.

This meant we had a semi-final match against Victoria University SC, which was a tough encounter as they were very good defensively and able to keep the ball in play. Yet again though, our girls were able to win in straight sets meaning we were in the Grand final….and against our first opponent, Eltham SC. Eltham won the first set 25-20, meaning we had to win the next 2 sets. In another close battle, Banksia won 25-19. It all came down to the third set. Like the whole day, some great defensive and attacking play from the Banksia girls, largely set up by Sandra’s excellent setting skills, some powerful hitting from Elina and some perfect defensive blocking from Savannah meant that the girls won the third and final set, 15-10. Congratulations to our amazing Year 8 Girls Volleyball State Champion team, along with their incredible student coaches, Erica Sor, Irene Pham, Angie Soeun and their teacher coach, Mr Wood.

RISE PROGRAM

Students at Keysborough Secondary College have a number of options to engage with and inspire their future pathway ambitions.  Usually this include pathways through the traditional VCE and VCE-Vocational Major certificates at one of our two campuses.  However for many reasons, sometimes this does not work for all students.  Our school has partnerships with a number of different education providers that support our students in finding a positive engagement with their individual educational needs.  Sage Deveney, for whom we would like to highlight as an outstanding success story, is one of these students.

We are highlighting Sage for his perseverance and resilience over the course of his time enrolled at our school.  While enrolled at Keysborough Secondary College, Sage has been completing the RISE program with the Foundation Learning Centre.  At the end of 2024 Sage will be graduating from this program and will be following a pathway into the VCE-Vocational Major through the Foundation Learning College.  In a recent meeting with Sage as part of the finalisation of his course, he spoke about his love a learning, and is inspired to pursue a pathway into Youth Work.

As a school we are exceptional proud of the progress Sage has made throughout the RISE program and is a great example of what Respect, Excellence and Diversity can mean.  Sage has demonstrated all of these values through his determination to follow an alternative but positive pathway through his education.  We would like to wish Sage every success in his goal of becoming a Youth Worker and look forward to hearing of more successes as he continues his VCE-Vocational Major studies.

Well done Sage!

FESTIVE SPIRIT SHINES AT KEYSBOROUGH SECONDARY COLLEGE'S ACACIA CAMPUS

On 12 December 2024, the Acacia Campus of Keysborough Secondary College was brimming with the spirit of generosity during its Festive Gift Donation Drive. The event, led by the passionate Mrs Aruna Malhotra and supported by the charitable organisation SarasCare, was a heart-warming success, showcasing the true meaning of the festive season.

The initiative aimed to spread joy to children and families in the local community. With SarasCare’s support, the drive exceeded all expectations, resulting in an incredible collection of high-quality gifts distributed to 21 primary schools, Monash Children’s Hospital, and Scouts Victoria.

Despite the event’s ambitious scale, it was planned and executed in an impressive three-week timeframe. The first stage involved coordinating with SarasCare to facilitate the delivery of donations to the college. Tremendous support came from RACV Melbourne, which delivered two vans filled with Lego, Nike shoes, pram liners, clothes, backpacks and pet beds. Mrs Malhotra’s unwavering dedication was evident as she personally collected 10 large boxes of donations from BigW in the city. The school’s Principal, Mr Aaron Sykes, also pitched in, transporting an entire van load of goods. Mrs Fode and Mrs Hughes contributed greatly to managing the logistics of the event.

The second stage involved sorting and wrapping the generous donations. Students from Years 8–12 enthusiastically participated in the process. While some students assisted during recess and lunch, others devoted two to three hours to ensure everything was ready. Remarkably, all 500 metres of wrapping paper were used in just three days! The packing station resembled a bustling Santa’s workshop, with our students embodying the festive spirit as Santa’s little helpers.

The final stage was the presentation of the gifts, celebrated with a lively ceremony. The school’s Symphonic Band, conducted by Tom Kenneth, delivered a spectacular performance, including a mesmerising rendition of All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey. The Music Department’s effort in preparing these talented students was truly commendable. Adding to the festive cheer, Santa himself made an appearance, delighting everyone in attendance.

The event was attended by Principals, Assistant Principals and representatives from 14 schools, Dr. Daniel Garama from Monash Children’s Hospital, Monash Health, Mr. Gaurav Bajaj representing Scouts Victoria, SarasCare founder Mr. Gautam Gupta and Board Member Ganesh shenoy, Telstra executive Marina Kelman, and the Senior Education Improvement Leader Amadeo Ferra . Media coverage captured the joy and energy of the day.

A heartfelt thanks  goes to our student leaders for helping transport gifts to our guests’ vehicles, to staff members for preparing morning tea for our guests, and to everyone who contributed to making this event a resounding success. Through the generosity of everyone involved, the Festive Gift Donation Drive not only brightened the lives of countless children and families but also reaffirmed the values of Respect Excellence and Diversity that are central to the Keysborough Secondary College community. The event serves as an inspiration and a reminder of what can be achieved when communities come together for a noble cause. Keysborough Secondary College has undoubtedly set a high standard for future charitable initiatives, proving that even in a short span of time, remarkable feats of kindness are possible. Three stand-out Year 10 VPC boys – Dexter Phetsomphou, Sang Tran, and Ahsen Raza were acknowledged for their incredible work in helping Mrs Malhotra in the lead-up to this event.

We look forward to hosting more community-driven initiatives in the future!
