Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four

As we reach the final stretch of Term 2, it’s hard to believe how quickly the past couple of weeks have flown by! With just two weeks of winter behind us, our 5/6 students have continued to push through the chilly days with enthusiasm and focus. It’s been a jam-packed term filled with learning, exploring and growing. Students have continued to attend exciting excursions to ACMI and the North Melbourne Huddle STEM experience, both of which offered hands-on opportunities to connect with our inquiry learning. With the school holidays just around the corner, we’re proud of the energy and effort students have shown as they work their way toward a well deserved break.

Social Media Alert

It has come to our attention that some students are watching inappropriate content on YouTube, TikTok and other social media platforms and discussing the content or words heard at school. Creators of these platforms are very clever when creating their content using cartoon characters and images that appeal to children but with an adult message and content. We strongly encourage all parents to be vigilant and monitor their child's social media use.

Janeen and Ben ACMI Excursion- 26/06/2025

Yesterday, 5 Orange and 6 White attended their excursion to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), and it was an incredible experience for all involved. The students represented our school community with pride and consistently demonstrated our core values throughout the day.

As part of the visit, students took part in the engaging Kids News program, where they discovered the power of media and the art of digital storytelling. They explored how media shapes our world and learned valuable skills in media literacy.

Beyond the structured activities, students had the opportunity to explore ACMI’s interactive exhibits. They played classic arcade games, watched captivating animations, and traced the fascinating evolution of film, television, and digital technology. The hands-on experiences sparked curiosity about filmmaking, television production, and technological innovation. It was a fun-filled day that perfectly blended education and entertainment—a truly successful and memorable excursion!

Check out some of the photos to get an insight into the incredible day we had!

Year 5

Literacy: Students have continued to explore The Wizard of Oz story. We begin each lesson by unpacking the vocabulary that will feature in the chapter that we will be reading. When learning about the Wizard of Oz, we have been identifying character traits, problems and solutions which arise throughout the story as well as investigating the deeper meanings behind particular scenes.

Numeracy: Students have continued to look at probability in Week 9 and drawn our attention to creating our own chance experiments. In Week 10, we have moved on to a new topic - 3D Objects. Students have found this topic very engaging as they have been able to explore the different features of 3D objects.

Inquiry: Students have been exploring different perspectives and how they are portrayed in the form of media. Students have been learning about Social, Cultural and Historical perspectives where they have interpreted and responded to videos and short clips about these perspectives and how they relate to their own personal experiences.

Religion: Students have been exploring different Religious Orders. They have been asked to select a range of Religious Orders and conduct further research on them. They will find out the purpose of the Religious Order, when it was founded, the purpose of the Religious Order etc.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

AFL DAY - Year 5 and 6 students participated in an AFL round robin tournament where they had the opportunity to play football against other schools. Students had a great day participating and showcasing their footy skills.

Year 6

Written by Rohan, Shayna and Sathya from 6 Orange

Literacy: This fortnight, students have been examining- “ The Mischievians”- by William Joyce. They used their skills of note-taking and writing to take notes and efficiently use them to write descriptions and fact files of the Mischievians. After they established an understanding of the story, they used their ideas to make their own Mischievians. They have also increased their word library by closely studying certain words in the book. This has helped them to increase their understanding of English.

Maths: In Maths, students have been learning about Patterns. In Ben’s Math group, they have focused on coordinates in maps and studying algorithms. . Ann’s math group has been learning how to characterize patterns using algebraic expressions and use function machines. In Scott’s math group, students have been learning about translation, reflection, and rotation.

Inquiry: Students have been working hard on their Inquiry Media projects. They are the final product of a term of learning about media. We have a large variety of projects, such as stop motion, claymation, animations, flipbooks, and podcasts. Below are some pictures of a few flip books and a newsletter created by students.

Religion: In Religion, students have chosen a saint to research. Those doing Confirmation have chosen their saint. They learn more about their saint by looking at their work inspired by God, their challenges in life and how they overcame them, and their miracles and life.  It has been presented on a slideshow. They have been working on this for weeks. We are excited to see all the wonderful information they have worked on and this is some of their work.
