Year 1/2 News

Learning Centre One

It’s hard to believe that we’ve already reached the final newsletter of the term! It has been a busy and rewarding few months for our Year 1/2 students, filled with meaningful learning experiences, personal development, and plenty of growth. Throughout the term, the students have shown great enthusiasm and curiosity across all areas of their learning.

Over the past few weeks in Literacy, students have been diving deeper into how texts are constructed, with a particular focus on sentence structure and informational writing. Here's what we've been working on:

  • Understanding Sentence Structure: Students are learning to identify different types of sentences within a text and understand how sentence variety helps make writing more interesting and effective.
  • Applying Sentence Structure in Writing: We're encouraging students to use a range of sentence types and structures in their own writing, helping them develop fluency and clarity.
  • Reading with a Writer’s Eye: As they read, students are noticing how authors use sentence structure to convey meaning and emphasis. This helps them become more thoughtful readers and writers.
  • Sharing Opinions and Justifying Ideas: Through discussions of shared texts, students are learning to express their opinions and support their thinking with reasons—an important skill for both reading comprehension and critical thinking.r our thoughts.

During Maths, we’ve been exploring the exciting world of patterns! Students are learning to identify, create, and extend a variety of patterns using shapes, colors, and numbers. We’ve been working on recognising and labeling repeating patterns — including simple two-part sequences and more complex three-part repeating patterns. The children have also been introduced to matching rules that help them understand how and why patterns repeat. In addition to repeating patterns, we’re beginning to explore incresing and decending number patterns. Students are learning to identify the rules behind increasing and decreasing patterns and use those rules to continue number sequences.

In Religion, we’ve been learning about important figures in the Catholic Church and how we can play a role in our faith community. The children have been exploring the life of Saint Francis and learning interesting facts about other Saints who have lived lives of faith, service, and kindness. We’ve also been learning about the role of a priest in the Church and the many ways priests support and guide their communities. As part of this, we’ve been getting to know the priests in our local Parish and learning to recognise their names and the important work they do. A special highlight was listening to Fr An speak about what it’s like to be a priest — a wonderful opportunity for the children to connect their learning with real-life experience.

Fr. An's Visit to the 1/2 students

As part of our Inquiry learning, students are exploring how we can respond to, create, and share ideas through media artworks. They are currently using comic strips as a way to communicate messages and tell stories, combining images and text to express their thinking creatively and have presented their work in an exciting way to share with their peers.

                     Farewell Shalome!
