🌱 LITERACY – Reading
This term in reading, our Grade 5 and 6 students are exploring Mac Slater, Cool Hunter by Tristan Bancks. As they dive into the fast-paced adventures of Mac, a creative teen on a mission to discover what’s cool, students will analyse character development, themes of innovation and identity, and the author’s use of language to engage readers. This will be explored through Literature Circles, whereby students will complete individual roles, enabling them collaborate with their group to share perspectives and opinions.
What you can do at home
Encourage your child to talk about the text they are reading and the different roles they are assigned.
🌱 Writing
This week, students will commence the Tristan Bancks Story School, an online writing program consisting of 24 lessons. These lessons are focused on a different aspect of the writing process (idea generation, drafting, character development, editing, etc.), and are aimed at engaging and elevating student writing.
What you can do at home
Encourage your child to talk about the writing skills and processes they have explored this week, and how this has elevated their writing.
🌱 NUMERACY
This week in Mathematics, students will be exploring fractions. They will learn how to compare, order, add, subtract, and multiply fractions, as well as apply their understanding to real-life problem-solving situations. This unit aims to strengthen their number sense and deepen their confidence when working with fractional concepts in a variety of contexts.
To best support each student’s learning in Mathematics, our Grade 5 and 6 students will be working in flexible learning groups this term. These groups are designed to target specific learning needs, allowing students to engage with concepts at a pace and level that supports both confidence and challenge. Groupings may change throughout the term as students progress and their needs evolve. Our aim is to provide a supportive and responsive environment that helps every student thrive in Maths.
What you can do at home
Support your child’s learning by encouraging them to complete their assigned activities on Mathletics. These tasks are a great way to practise what they’ve learned in class. Talking through the questions together or asking your child to explain their thinking can help build their understanding and confidence in working with chance and probability.
🌱 CBL
This term our Big Idea is Change. Grade 5 and 6 students will explore how our local environment has experienced environmental and geographical changes.
Essential Question:
How do we leave a lasting legacy?
Guiding Questions:
- In what ways has our area changed over time?
- How do rules and regulations help to protect our environment?
- How are the environmental changes in places tracked and managed over time?
- What can we do as a community to ensure the ongoing sustainability of Wonga Park?
🌱 HOMEWORK
Students are expected to complete homework on a weekly basis. This consists of
- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice
- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign
- 2 Nessy activities
This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads. Your child's teacher will check this homework on Friday.
Grade 5 students have been introduced to Buddy Bags, which are gifted to their 2026 Prep Buddies. The first task in creating their Buddy Bag will be to create a handmade toy or game. The details of this task will be further explained in class and will also be uploaded to Showbie for easy access.
Grade 6 students have been introduced to the Memory Book they will create in Terms 3 and 4, to reflect on their experiences at Wonga Park Primary School. This information will be communicated to parents via email, and is available for students on Showbie.
🌿 REMINDERS
🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged. This is especially important this week as students are completing a range of online assessments.
