Welcome Back :)

Dear Parents and friends,

Welcome!!!

We extend a warm welcome to new staff, parents and students and look forward to developing strong partnerships with you for your child’s learning.  We have had a very smooth start to the new year.  It was lovely to see so many excited faces on our first day back for the 1-6 students on Wednesday and look forward to new Preps starting next Tuesday 6/2/2024.

Thanks to all the parents and carers who passed on the positive feedback about how well the students settled in on the first day.  Parents and children appreciated the letters home with maps and staff photos last year as it made coming to school less stressful.

The theme for Term 1 is “Peace and Harmony”.  With Harmony Day in week 8 we will be focusing on everyone’s right to be included and not be excluded on the basis of culture.

That means we are exploring how we set up a safe classroom and outside environment to help our kids develop good social skills, and be inclusive.

Students will explore the importance of everyone’s language and look at different cultural perspectives including First Nation perspectives.  They will work with the specialist team in visual arts, multimedia Italian to develop their environmental awareness and understand and include all cultures.

All students will receive a learning newsletter and their classes’ timetable.  The learning newsletter explains what deep knowledge will be covered this term and examples of what children will be achieving in their year levels in the disciplines.

Arrive on time Please

One valuable way  to enhance children’s success in school  is to ensure that children arrive on time and in time to prepare for the day ahead.  It is a fact that lateness and low attendance affects your child’s literacy and numeracy learning directly.

Getting involved in school life

Included in all newsletters is a calendar to keep you informed of upcoming events and to support families in planning their times and educational conversations with their children .  We are continually trying to improve the newsletter and our advertising of events and hope that this will help families to plan ahead for school events.  Our website is online so that parents can access copies of newsletters, notes etc..  If you have any ideas or suggestions for the website please let us know and we will try to include them.

Another way you can be involved in your child’s education is to join the Parents forum or school council.

School council elections will be coming up in February.  Notice of elections will be out on the 19thof February.  This is the first year of our elected school council and as such there will be a number of 1 year vacancies and 2 year vacancies in the parent category.  Within state wide guidelines, the major responsibilities of all school councils include:

  • determining the general educational policy of the school within guidelines issued by the Minister
  • developing and monitoring the directions of the school charter or strategic and annual implementation plan
  • approving and monitoring the school budget (including school generated funds) which needs to be consistent with the school charter or strategic and annual implementation plan
  • maintaining and improving the school’s buildings and grounds
  • reporting annually to the school community and the Department of Education and Training
  • determining the school’s student code of conduct which may include a student dress code
  • making a recommendation to the Secretary to the Department of Education and Training on the appointment of a school principal (see Teaching Service Order No. 149 and Principal Class Selection Guidelines
  • School council meets the third Monday of the month

More information will be in the next newsletter.  However if you are interested in any of these opportunities please drop in or call for more information

School Council Election Process for 2024

This document outlines the School Council Election process for Roxburgh Homestead Primary school.

The principal will issue a notice and call for nominations on the 16th of February 2024. For parents, this notice will probably be given to your child so you may need to check with them whether it has been sent home.

If you decide to stand for election, you will need to arrange to be nominated and seconded by persons who are eligible for the same category as you will stand for. The principal can provide information about these categories.

Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the notice of election.

If there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted in the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed.

The timeline for school council elections is as follows.

Personal Property

Personal property is often brought to school by student’s staff and visitors.  They can include mobile phones, calculators and toys, sporting equipment and items of family or personal importance.  Please note that that private property brought to school is not insured and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage.  At DPS we encourage children not to bring any valuable items to school

Reminder to all students riding their bikes or scooters to school.  You must have a bike lock and secure your property in the bike shed. Our bike shed is locked every morning and not opened until home time however to ensure complete security you must secure your bike etc with your own combination lock

Accident Insurance

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development does not provide personal accident insurance for students.  Parents and guardians are generally responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs, unless the injury is caused by negligence (carelessness) of a Department or school council employee or volunteer.

Student accident insurance policies are available from the private insurance market.  These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare..  They need to be obtained and paid for by parents of individual students.  This school does not have a whole of school insurance policy.

Uniform

Just want to remind everyone that our school uniform is compulsory.  The uniform colors are royal blue and whitePlease do not send your kids to school in black pants/leggings etc.  It is not part of the uniform.  This week we have been helping out by swapping and lending non uniform items with uniform items.
