Newman Selective
Diverse Learning - Newman 2024
At St Patrick’s Primary School Sutherland, the Newman Gifted Education Program seeks to provide a whole-school Gifted Education program embedded across the curriculum within a nurturing Catholic environment.
The program addresses the academic, social and emotional needs of gifted students, noting that these are best catered for when students are working with like-minded peers.
Within the Newman Selective Gifted Education Program schools, teachers that are trained in Gifted Education deliver an appropriately differentiated curriculum to ensure the diverse learning needs of gifted students are met in and beyond the classroom.
At St Patrick’s, we value authentic learning because it respects the dignity of learners and builds on their prior experience, personal interests and innate potential. It fosters critical thinking and the application of skills and knowledge in a variety of settings. Students learn authentically when they:
- engage in work that is rigorous and challenging
- engage critically with the material being learned - both as individuals and in collaboration;
- make connections between the material being learned, and their own lives and experiences;
- share what they have learned with others;
- exercise choice as they pursue their own passions and interests;
- believe that they are capable learners and have high expectations of themselves;
- apply knowledge and skills creatively in a range of situations (Statement of Authentic Learning, SCS)
During 2024 there will be Newman flexible grouping learning opportunities for students in all years in English and Mathematics. We also have groupings in STEM, Visual Arts and Performing Arts to provide opportunities for students to engage in higher-order thinking activities to extend and develop their skills and talents across these domains.
Flexible grouping is a data-driven teaching practice that allows frequent movement of students in and out of groupings according to performance and learning needs each term.
