Sports Excellence

As we kick off the new term, we're thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of the Sports Excellence Program. Get ready to break a sweat, have fun and embark on a journey to a healthier and more active lifestyle!

Emerging Athlete Program – Years 5 to 8

In 2024, we have seen an enormous increase in student numbers, which we’re thrilled about. We now have 160 students involved in this program, which we have revamped with an array of exciting workouts designed to cater to all fitness levels. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just starting your fitness journey, there's something for everyone. We believe in fostering a sense of community and inclusivity. Our gym program is designed to be a welcoming space for all students, regardless of their fitness level or background.

Students this week have enjoyed getting a taste of everything the program has to offer, working on balance, coordination, mobility, strength and proprioception.

There's still places available in the program if your child wishes your child to sign up.

Simply complete the application form and we’ll get in contact with you.

Sports Excellence Elective – Years 9 and 10

In the first week of the program, students completed their initial round of testing. Collecting pre-testing data in the gym is a fundamental step in establishing a baseline for individual fitness levels and overall health. This initial assessment provides crucial insights into a student’s strengths, weaknesses and specific areas that require attention. Additionally, pre-testing data serves as a benchmark for tracking progress over time, motivating individuals as they witness tangible improvements. It helps in setting realistic and achievable fitness goals, allowing participants to measure their success and celebrate milestones. You can see a snapshot of the fitness testing on the Sports Excellence Instagram page.

Let's fill this term with energy, achievement and good health. Get ready to unleash your potential at the Girton gym!

Aerobic Gymnastics

In 2024, Girton Grammar School is once again offering Aerobic Gymnastics as a co-curricular activity for Junior and Senior School students. The program enables students with a range of abilities to develop their coordination, strength, flexibility and teamwork skills, as well as have fun!

Sessions are coached by Sally Moore, who was awarded National Champion in 2000 and worked as a fitness trainer for over 20 years. She is also an intermediate kinder gym and tumbling coach and a trainee trainer and assessor for Gymnastics Australia. Sally has coached several National Champions and is currently coaching athletes competing at Palmers Gym. Sessions are also coached by Ruby Conti (12 Millward), who is the current International Junior National Champion and has completed her beginner coaching course with Gymnastics Australia. Due to the large number of students participating, we are introducing another coach, Amelia Carmody, who joins us from Palmers Gym and holds an intermediate coaching qualification with Gymnastics Australia.

Competitions

Students will have the option of competing in the following events:

  • Aeroschool Secondary National Qualifiers
  • Victorian Aeroschool Victorian Championships.

Successful teams at the Aeroschool National Qualifiers will then be selected to represent Girton at the National Aeroschool Championships on the Gold Coast in September (specific dates to be advised). In 2023, Girton was the Champion Primary School at the State Championships and we had 26 students represent Girton on the Gold Coast at the National Championships, with every student placing in the top six. We have built up a strong team over the past few years and are excited to expand our program.

If your child is keen to join the team, please check the Astra page for further information or email Belinda Vernon at belindavernon@girton.vic.edu.au.
