Gojo exchange
In January 2024, three Girton students had the incredible opportunity to visit our sister school in Nara Prefecture, Gojo Senior High School. Kiara Primmer (12 Millward), Benjamin Lim (11 Frew) and Lewis Kallaur (11 Aherne) spent two weeks attending Gojo SHS and living with a host family. They were fortunate to be able to experience the local fire festivals, attend calligraphy and tea ceremony classes, and visit Universal Studios in Osaka. All students were able to hone their Japanese language skills in authentic situations, which will hold them in good stead as they complete their VCE Japanese studies. Our students made lifelong friends in Japan and are looking forward to March, when Girton Grammar School will welcome 12 students and two teachers from Gojo SHS. Gojo students will complete homestays and attend classes and school activities with their host students.
The January exchange was the first exchange to Gojo SHS since COVID-19 and is the first exchange to take place since 2023’s 30th anniversary of the commencement of our sister school arrangement with Gojo.
Another exchange program will commence this September, when 16 Girton Japanese students visit Gojo SHS. They will soon start attending regular meetings to prepare for their visit and are looking forward to a life-changing experience in Japan.

Japan's Emperor Naruhito has a special connection to Melbourne. In 1974, the 14-year-old Emperor Naruhito came to Melbourne for a one-week homestay to experience life in Australia. This was his first trip abroad!
During his stay, Emperor Naruhito enjoyed his Aussie life to the fullest. He enjoyed playing sports, particularly tennis and golf, and rode a hand-me-down bicycle that he fixed up with his host brothers. He also explored various parts of Victoria and spent time with his host family in Point Lonsdale. At a press conference, Emperor Naruhito said that his homestay in Melbourne was "one of the greatest memories" of his life.
