Year 3

We cannot believe that we are in the final month of 2023! We are getting ready to wrap up and celebrate all the learning the students have done this year.
In Writing, we have been reading through a range of traditional fairy tales, identifying whose perspective they are told from and then having a go at rewriting them from a different perspective. We also introduced the students to some traditional fables and asked them to share what they believe is the moral of the fable. Students were then asked to write a sequel to the fable incorporating what the character has learnt. To finish off our writing for the year students were exposed to a range of fractured fairy tales. These are based on traditional fairy tales but they often have a modern twist. Our students then had a go at writing, editing and publishing their own fractured fairy tales.
In Knowledge, we have been learning about different celebrations around the world. Students are reading about the different ways in which people, cultures and religions celebrate. They have learnt specific vocabulary for each celebration, the meaning of each celebration and when the different celebrations take place.
In Number & Algebra, students have been consolidating their knowledge of multiplication and division as well solving worded problems. We started off by identifying which operation matched the worded problem and then progressed to matching equations to written problems. Students solved worded multiplication and division problems that involved one step and also learnt ways in which they can solve multi-step word problems.
In Measurement and Geometry, students have been looking at three dimensional shapes. They reviewed their features, investigated their nets and linked them to the two dimensional shapes they know. For students to demonstrate their understanding, they created a net as packaging for a product. Students have also been learning about grid maps and how to interpret a grid map by answering questions. They learnt to follow directions on a map and give directions that match a path on a map.
As part of our Celebrations around the world unit, students have been making items to match the different celebrations we have learnt about. Using their knowledge, students have created invitations and shopping lists for celebrations they have chosen. They have also drawn rangoli, made regatta boats, drawn sugar skulls and decorated Easter eggs.
We hope you have a safe and happy holiday break. Thank you for your support throughout the year.
