Emily F - Stocktake queen! 9,386 beeps so far!

Thank you to Year 9 student Emily F who has assisted with the huge task of the end of year library stocktake.  We thought it would be a good idea to grab Emily, in between book scanning to ask her a few questions about her job.

Is this the 1st time you have completed a library stocktake?

No, I also helped in last years stocktake.  Last years stocktake was HUGE and lots of start-stop, start-stop as we were also removing old books from the catalogue.

Do you enjoy working in the library?

Yes! I love the space and the people!

What have been your main tasks in the stocktake?

Scanning all the books.  I think I've improved my scanning from last year - I've had a loooot of practice!

What has been the best part of the job?

I love scanning - it's such a satisfying job.  I love the beep beep noise!  I enjoy helping because it would be such a hard job to try to do all by yourself.

What has been the hardest part of the job?

Getting the big heavy books to open up for scanning - the edges are so thick.  And scanning the maps was hard work!

What genre of books did you enjoy scanning the most?

I like the old ones in the non-fiction side, they felt nice. I like their texture.  I also liked some of the covers on the new fiction books.

What skills do you need to do stocktake?

You need to be good at doing the same task over and over again.  You need to be patient and be ok with getting interrupted all the time.  You also need to be physically strong and fit to lift all the books and to have good listening skills for hearing any scanning errors.  Most of all I think you need good teamwork - it was fun working together!

Why do you have to do a stocktake each year?

To make sure all the books are here for our students and staff.  You don't want to miss any.

Thanks Emily for your great help.  Can we "book" you in for next year?  Maybe get to 10,000 books!

Yes - definitely!

We also return to the world of Eragon with Murtagh by Christopher Paolini, a new novel set a year after the events of the Inheritance Cycle (and another hefty tome!) You can find both of these novels on page one.

For any senior school students who have seen the new film Killers of the Flower Moon and are curious to learn more, the non-fiction book by David Grann from which the film was based, has been released in a young adult version, adapted to suit teenage readers.
