CURRICULUM FOCUS

Using number lines is a strategy for solving subtraction problems that some children love if they understand the order of numbers.

Start at the original number, and jump backwards however many you are taking away. You only count it when you have completed the jump and landed on the next number - be careful!

VOCABULARY

Number line: A line on which numerals are marked

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

You may like to watch this video if you are unfamiliar with how to complete subtraction on a number line.

Get your child to write the numbers 0-20 on pieces of paper. Put the numbers in order on the floor. Your child can physically jump up and down the number line, practicing addition and subtraction.

10-5? Start at 10. Do 5 jumps backwards. Where have you landed? An extra challenge: practice the accompanying number sentence. 10-5=5
