Victorian High Ability Program English Masterclass

Last week,  some of our of Grade 5 students attended a Victorian High Ability Program English Masterclass session at Black Rock Primary School. Our Grade 5’s had the opportunity to work with students from Black Rock PS and Sandringham PS and the explored the concepts of writing with Brendan and Joana from the 100-story Building Platform.

Firstly, students identified what they enjoy in a story and what they like to include in their own aspects of writing, some of which included humour, suspense, cliff-hangers and mystery. They participated in a range of activities which included effective techniques for idea development, plot lines, character description, events, problems and solutions. Students then ‘story-boarded’ a range of amazing ideas to then create their own stories and share them amongst the group. It was great to listen to and reflect on a range of amazing pieces of writing!

It was another fantastic opportunity to work with different students and expand on the skills and concepts they had applied during their VHAP virtual online sessions earlier in the year. Well done!

We have had over 30 Grade 5&6 students participate in the Victorian High Ability Program this year in either English or Mathematics. It has enabled these students to extend and challenge their thinking in a different platform and with a wide range of students from all over Victoria.
