Year 6 Strings, Band, and Chamber Strings Attend QSO Concert at QPAC
Last week, our Year 6 Strings, Band and Chamber Strings students had the wonderful opportunity to attend a Queensland Symphony Orchestra concert at the QPAC Concert Hall. This special event was presented in association with Concert Lab and paid tribute to one of the most iconic film composers of our time, Hans Zimmer.
From the heroic swells of The Dark Knight to the touching themes of Kung Fu Panda, the performance showcased Zimmer’s extraordinary range, spanning decades of unforgettable movie scores. Students were swept away by the powerful sounds of Inception, The Lion King, The Da Vinci Code, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Holiday and more.
Hosted by Andrew Pogson and Dan Golding from the podcast Art of the Score and conducted by Vanessa Scammell, this immersive musical experience brought the magic of cinema to life and left our young musicians truly inspired.

Reflections from our students.
Our visit to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) was an amazing experience! The musicians were incredibly talented and the music was full of energy and emotion. The dynamics were outstanding, it moved from piano to forte so smoothly. I really enjoyed watching the orchestra and seeing how well they worked together. The whole performance was so engaging and it showed how music can tell a story without words. I’m so glad we had the chance to go!

I really enjoyed our visit to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra! I enjoyed how the string players had the ability to suddenly change tone in the music using impressive dynamics and different keys. We were seated very close to the front so we could hear and see the strings musician’s skills really clearly. I liked the theme in the music and how clearly it was shown by the orchestra players. The musicians were all extremely talented and I liked how the conductor’s outfit matched the theme and tone of the song. I also liked how the musicians could use their instruments to make it sound like something else, like when the cello sounded like the erhu (traditional Chinese bowed string instrument) in Kung Fu Panda. I was extremely excited to get a chance to see the QSO perform!

State Honours Ensemble Program – Brisbane
The State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) in Brisbane is designed for talented young musicians from Years 6–12, typically requiring a performance level of AMEB Grades 4–6. This year, we are proud to celebrate Xiaoguo, a Year 5 student, who was selected to participate in this prestigious program, an outstanding achievement! Over the weekend, Xiaoguo dedicated more than 15 hours to rehearsals and concluded the experience with a polished ensemble concert on Sunday. She represented our school with commitment, talent, and pride. Congratulations, Xiaoguo, on this incredible accomplishment!
