Music Matters

Winter Music Concert
Xin Ru NG's Queensland Music Tour reflection:
Over five unforgettable days, the senior ensembles of our school—String Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Senior Jazz—embarked on an inspiring tour of Brisbane and the Gold Coast as part of the Queensland Music Tour.Comprising mainly senior students, the tour was packed with moments of excitement, laughter, and learning. From rehearsals and performances to exhilarating theme park rides and new friendships, there was something for everyone.
One of the most memorable aspects of the trip was performing for primary school students and engaging with other young musicians. Whether it was playing for enthusiastic audiences or collaborating in workshops, students gained valuable insights into new techniques and performance skills.
No doubt, the highlights included theme parks like Movie World and Dreamworld, as well as the incredible live-action performance of How to Train Your Dragon (HTTYD).
Here’s what some of the students had to say:
“The Steel Taipan was good, though I think in terms of more music-related stuff it was really nice to see the primary schoolers sing along to some of Wind Symphony/the combined pieces. I’ll also add that Wind Symphony improved their playing noticeably after watching the HTTYD Live Action movie.”
“The Drop Tower at Movie World was so fun and funny, but I really loved doing jazz band with my friends.”
“The Queensland music tour was amazing. Playing and workshopping with different bands gave insight into learning new techniques. The tour also brought us to make many memorable memories at the theme parks.”
“Walking through Brisbane on night one was a highlight for me. The city lights really made the trip feel special. That said, the Steel Taipan at Dreamworld was also unforgettable!!”
“Being able to go on rides with my friends and teachers had to be a highlight of my trip. I think it allowed me to become closer and have better bonds with them. Playing at Dreamworld was also a fun experience—with all the work we put into preparing for it, I think we played pretty great.”
Personally, of all the highlights and activities, I believe it was the small moments that brought out the best in all of us. From hectic mornings at 6AM to navigating time, equipment, and everything else, this music tour truly allowed us to foster bonds that strengthened friendships and saw new ones bloom.
Music, of course, took centre stage, with the favourite performances of a Disney classic bringing joy to the little ones from the South East Queensland Regional Music Tour and McGregor Primary School. It was an absolute joy to be part of such an unforgettable event, and I extend my thanks to all the staff who made it possible.
- Mr Dean – Thank you sincerely for your tireless effort in planning and managing the tour.
- Mrs Howes – You absolute legend! Thank you for keeping us grounded and calm through it all.
- Ms Walters – Thank you for being an inspiring conductor and teacher, and for your patience and passion.
- Mr Veevers – Thank you for the laughs, the energy, and your leadership in jazz.
- Charlotte – Thank you for always looking out for us, assisting the staff, and making the trip so much more fun.
On a more personal note, I don’t think I’ll ever forget the amazing memories we created. For a few days, we immersed ourselves in the beauty that music brings—its ability to bring joy, foster friendships, and create lifelong memories.
