Hello from Hakea!

On Friday, we had a visit from Museum's Victoria who shared their Rockets and Robots program with us.

Josh led the incursion by beginning to talk to about the concept of space, and where it is. We learnt that space is 100km's away from us on earth! Josh then showed us some experiments with balloons and a fizzy aspirin which caused a soft toy rocket to shoot into the air.

This led into a discussion about what a rocket needs to take off, and what astronauts can take with them into space. We spoke about the space suit, and the different elements that the suit has to protect the astronauts when they go into space.

We watched a video showing real astronauts in space, and how they eat, wash their hair and do exercise. It was really interesting!

The discussion then led towards the perseverance rover on Mars, a robot which helps astronauts learn more about space and the planet Mars.

The children were then invited to pair off and work together to program real robots, by giving them instructions via buttons to go up, down, left, right and around. This was so much fun, and the children enjoyed this hands-on experience.

The incursion ended by the children being provided the opportunity to hold a real piece of a meteorite from space. The children enjoyed looking and touching this amazing artefact.
