Grade 5 & 6

What a jam-packed term!  The Fives and Sixers have been very busy researching scientists, conducting experiments, exploring fractions and decimals, including powers of 10. Not to mention, going on camp, athletics day, special persons days, celebrating a range of special days.

Maths Uber Driver Activity

As a grade 5/6 unit we did an activity that involved converting distances. We had to make a delivery from a takeaway shop and we then chose a location to deliver to. Then we had to write down the place, the delivery distance in kms then in metres. Students found the km and then converted  km to metres. Students struggled at first but as we continued this lesson over a few days they only got better at converting distances. It was an amazing task that all the students enjoyed!

It takes 13 minutes and 7.9km in distance to get from KFC Bendigo to Epsom Primary School. Since the task was to convert kilometres to metres and the distance is 7.9km we can convert the Km to metres (7900m) if the distance wasn't at least 1km students got the opportunity to use decimal points for the km (0.45km) or to pick a different destination.

Bendigo Council Waste Incursion - 8th of May

Did you know! You shouldn't put e-waste in the landfill bin (red) because it is a fire hazard and could cause damage to waste trucks or harm truck drivers.

Batten's Disease Day

On the 6th of June, the 5/6s’ threw a party for Zephyr Spark to celebrate Batten’s Disease Day. Batten’s Disease is a rare condition that affects your brain power and motor function. It’s a genetic disease, meaning it gets passed through generations. The whole of Epsom PS wore a touch of orange to raise awareness and also to raise money to find a cure.

Planning the party

For 2 weeks 5/6O worked tirelessly to make this the best day we could for Zephyr. From orange decorations to fabulous signs to paper chains as long as 3 and a half metres, we could tell this was going to be a great party.

The Day Arrives

From the moment we arrived at school, you could feel the positive vibes in the air.

We took a few photos with Zephyr, before the excitement began.

After lunch, we set up the tables for the delicious food. There were all types of treats, from biscuits, to perfectly cooked cupcakes. The guests arrived, and the party started!

We raised $748 to go towards the Batten's Disease Foundation. Thankyou everyone for your support in donating and purchasing items from the canteen.

I made a texture box for Zephyr. The party was really good. We all had big smiles on our faces - Zali

Batten’s Disease is  sad, and I hate to imagine any families that have to deal with it - Kobi

The music was fantastic. It really hit the spot. Cheezels Rule! Zephyr was the GOAT for that day, ruling the dance floor - Geneva

The party was really good, and the food was great, I'm happy to celebrate Zephyrs life and make it happier - Mason W

There were lots of orange decorations hanging from the doors. Zephyr’s parents’ attended, and lightened the mood. - Indie

My friend's group brought in things for Zephyr to smell, like chocolate sauce and body wash. He loved it. And there were lots of people, 30+. - Adele

Who knew that dry ice could be so much fun during our science incursion!

This term the grade 5/6s’ have been focusing on science and the famous scientists and physicists who’ve made a big impact to our world. In class we’ve been writing biographies about our chosen scientist. The students have been researching events and things about their person, and have stumbled upon some interesting facts and views about their scientist's life, values and ambitions. - Rylie and Designa

Flynn Pata- Anders Celsius

“Anders Celsius invented the celsius temperature scale, also known as the centigrade scale, C meaning 100 steps.”

Archie Trewartha- Charles Darwin

“Charles Darwin The inventor of the evolution theory, went on a ship called the HMS Beagle as the ship’s naturalist.”

Gwen Michell- Albert Einstein

“He got kicked out of school because his teachers thought he was lazy and causing trouble when he wasn’t.”

Evana Beto- Rosalind Franklin

“She discovered DNA and after that, a few years later she died from ovarian cancer.”

Lucas Sparkes- Edward Jenner

“Edward Jenner created a cure for smallpox, he got told by a man he should sign up for med school.”

Antony Pai- Stephan Hawking

“He explored black holes and stars. He had a disease called ALS.”

FEAST Program

This term, we participated in the Food Education and Sustainability Program (FEAST). In this program students explore the issue of food waste through classroom cooking.

It was good to try new foods that I haven’t tried and being creative making the fruit skewers. It was also challenging learning to cut the fruits up- Oya

I liked the watermelon because it tastes good. I liked cutting up the bananas because I learned how to use a knife for cutting up different foods – Piper

It was just so fun making the food and then getting to eat it – Beau

Phillip Island Camp

The grade 5 and 6 students had an amazing time away at Phillip Island. They got up to a bunch of different activities, including watching wildlife such as penguins and pelicans, exploring illusions and mazes, ten pin bowling and being extreme adventurers on the flying fox, abseiling and the giant swing. The campsite was full of laughter and smiles throughout the entire trip, as well as a lot of tired eyes on the journey home.

Camp Adventures:

I loved the flying fox and the giant swing! It was so much fun. I went right to the top, it was scary! - Antony

I really enjoyed camp because we went to A-Maze'N Things. I liked the giant slide, it looked scary but it turned out to be good! - Apajok

I had fun with the Circuitron. It spins you around and I went upside down! - Gwen

On the flying fox it looked high and you had to jump off instead of walking off. When I was up there it looked scary but when I was on it, it was really fun! - Kobi
