SFS JUNIORS – COMMUNITY WALK & INCURSION

Community Walk

The SFS Junior RE-INQUIRY topic this term is ‘Community’. We have been exploring the question, ‘What makes a community and helps it to grow?’ We took a walking tour of the Lynbrook surrounds and community hub, specifically stopping by the Post Office, Lynbrook community centre and Coles supermarket.

We discovered important people, places and objects on our walking tour such as optometrists, hairdressers, the post office, kindergartens and Coles Supermarket.

We talked about farmers, delivery drivers, child care workers, teachers, doctors and garbage truck drivers; all people in our community that help our community survive and thrive!

We were very lucky that Coles donated some fresh fruit for us to enjoy.

Brickworks Incursion

Supreme Incursions hosted a Brickworks incursion to develop our understanding of community.

We pushed our critical and creative thinking with some amazing Lego builds. A few of the rotations included; building a community, following instructions to make objects in a community, creating a portrait of people we see in our world and making objects for transportation.

We even had some uniforms for exploration including firefighters, bakers and nurses.

Ecological & Environmental Action Team:

Planting for the Future

Senior Action Teams kicked off during Term 2, with two enthusiastic teams of students who elected to focus on Ecological Action keen to get involved in the garden.

Bright minds explored the avenues of impact these teams could action, and willing hands energetically threw their efforts into weeding and preparing the main garden beds for new soil and seedlings.

Other students have keenly taken on the care of cleaning, feeding and watering our four friendly and patient SFS school chickens, collecting eggs to be sold from LS2.

Students excitedly bedded new broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, strawberry and spinach plants into fresh soil with care, and installed ‘chicken protection’ netting, which we hope will be sufficient protection from a rather impressive flock of bold cockatoos.

A selection of leaders have cheerfully adapted to the added responsibility of watering the garden each morning before Morning Gathering begins.

Most recently, students have begun to create posters to educate others and advertise our plans and products, as we care for the growing plants.

Posters for the eggs are underway, as well as explanation texts on the new composting system and worm farms we’re kicking off. Students have also been very curious about the process of picking and selling, or curing, the bountiful harvest of black olives.

It’s a fierce battle against time and the wild beasts!

With an increasing number of students being encouraged to get involved in the garden through Action Teams, the Garden Grubs Lunchtime Club and Learning Space engagement, it’s looking to be a busy year in the St Francis de Sales green space.

If any of our awesome family members would be interested in:

  • teaching the students how to brine olives,
  • purchasing olives to brine at home,
  • improving quality of life for the hens,
  • donating or constructing additional fencing for the garden beds and hens
  • reinforcing the wooden sleepers of the garden beds, and
  • assisting in maintaining the garden and caring for the chickens over the school holidays
