🔥 Pentecost Sunday Gospel: John 20:19–23

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews,Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them,                          “Peace be with you.”When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,“Receive the Holy Spirit.Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

🌿 Reflection

Pentecost is often called the "birthday of the Church" because it marks the moment the disciples were empowered to begin their mission. In John’s Gospel, this mission starts not with wind and fire, but with peace, breath, and forgiveness.

The disciples are locked away in fear. Into that fear, Jesus comes and speaks peace. He does not scold, demand, or criticise. He breathes the Holy Spirit upon them, echoing the breath of life in Genesis. It is a quiet but profound Pentecost - a divine restart.

Then He gives them authority: to forgive sins. The gift of the Spirit is not just personal - it’s missional. They are sent to carry Christ’s peace and forgiveness into the world. And we, the Church today, are part of that same mission.

💬 Discussion Questions

“Peace be with you.”

  • What kind of peace is Jesus offering the disciples?
  • Where in your life do you long for Christ’s peace right now?

“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

  • What does it mean to be "sent" by Jesus?
  • How are you being sent—at home, at work, in your community?

“Receive the Holy Spirit.”

  • How do you experience the Holy Spirit today?
  • Have there been moments when the Spirit gave you strength or courage?

Forgiveness is a central part of this Gospel.

  • Why do you think Jesus links the Holy Spirit so closely with forgiveness?
  • Is there someone you need to forgive, or from whom you need forgiveness?

The disciples go from fear to joy.

  • What fears might be holding you back from fully living your faith?
  •

How might the Holy Spirit help you move forward with confidence?

🙏 Closing Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of your love.Where there is fear, bring peace.

Where there is sin, bring mercy.Where there is doubt, bring courage.Send us into the world as bearers of your light and truth.Amen.
