Grade Prep - 2

This term, students have been mastering the skills of throwing and catching using different sport equipment such as nets, bean bags, GAGA balls, tennis balls and down balls. Students have also started the soccer unit focusing on dribbling, passing and defending. It has been great watching students confidence grow as they challenge themselves to make the skills more difficult and choosing different partners to work with.

Grade 3 - 6

This term, students have been focusing on learning how to play European Handball, Lawn Bowls and Netball. Students have been working on throwing and catching, shooting goals and defending. It was awesome watching students smile as they learnt how to play Lawn Bowls and become pros and measure to check what ball was closest to the white Jack. The next unit of work that students will be working on is Athletics events.

We have had an AWESOME two weeks of Science learning in STEM!

Here is what we did:

Foundation and Grade 1/2 Feeling the Insects Box!

Our students in the F-2 area have continued to learn about living things. This week they had to identify by touch whether a bug was an insect or not. Don't worry, they weren't real!

Grade 3/4 Photosynthesis Experiment

Our students in Grade 3/4 have spent the last two weeks learning about photosynthesis. This week, we worked on creating a solution that would help conduct light. Once the solution was created, we used a syringe to extract the oxygen out of some spinach leaves. We then put the leaves into the solution and put it under the light.

When the photosynthesis process began, our spinach began to float!

Grade 5/6 Mimicry Experiment

Our students in Grade 5/6 are learning about different animal adaptations. The best way to learn about a particular adaptation is to experience it for yourself! This week, the 5/6s learnt about the viceroy butterfly's ability to mimic the poisonous monarch butterfly. Students were given three cups with three different liquids. They were told to drink one of the clear liquids. Some students enjoyed the liquid and others did not. The question became, would you risk drinking the clear liquid or would you just go for the one you know will always taste nice?

Just like predators will not go for the viceroy or monarch butterfly because they both look the same!

In weeks 5 & 6, students in Prep – 2 have been discussing ways in which we can maintain healthy bodies and minds. Students have been identifying different food groups, and what types of food we should be eating in order to keep ourselves in good health. They have also been discussing different kinds of activities that keep their bodies and minds healthy, such as spending time with friends, playing sport, drinking lots of water, and reading a book.

In preparation for our gardening program, Grade 3/4s have been discussing kind and respectful ways we can act when in the BPS Community Garden. They have been brainstorming rules that students across all year levels can follow, such as correct use of tools, what we need to wear, and how to be careful with our plants.

Grade 5/6s are also preparing for the start of their gardening sessions, by tidying up the Community Garden space near the Eco Centre, making the space tidy and ready for planting. They have also been working on posters for the Community Garden, which will be displayed around the school.
