Literacy

We are starting to wrap up our work on questioning, and have been looking at how to develop a range of questions on a single topic. A quiz is a great example of how questions on one topic can be used. Students have investigated a range of different animals during our information gathering to write our reports. Students have also been exploring minibeasts in STEM.

The facts we discovered in these sessions can then be used to create quiz questions.

Can you answer these quiz questions?

1. How many thumbs does a koala have?

2. What foods are toxic for dogs?

3. What does a sloth eat?

4. What are the three body parts of an insect?

Do you know lots about a topic?

You could create your own mini quiz at home to test your family!

Numeracy

We have continued to work on developing number fluency to assist with solving addition equations. Some of the strategies we are exploring include: pairs to 10, doubles, near doubles, counting on, using number lines, and adding 10.

We have been using lots of manipulatives to make numbers and model how we can bundle ten items together. One example of this is using icy pole sticks. We can have 87 loose icy pole sticks, or we can make 8 bundles that have ten each to show that we have 8 tens and 7 ones.

 SEL / Inquiry

Our inquiry question is ‘How do we connect to where we live?’

This week students have participated in a wildlife incursion that looked at a range of Australian animals.

Animals are a great example of connection to country as they all have special adaptations that help them to survive in their habitat. Some animals can camouflage, some have eyes that can look in different directions, some have special claws or teeth to help them climb or eat.

Our school wellbeing team have been sharing resources with the teachers around best learning.

A healthy, happy child is a good learner.

One way you can support a healthy, happy child is with:

ROUTINE

Children respond well to structure. They like to know what is expected of them and how to be successful. A routine helps children to know what to do and when to do it.

You can have a routine for the morning to help get ready for school. You can have a bedtime routine.

Celebrating and showcasing our classes

Our cohort assembly is held every second Friday, starting at 2:30pm. It is a great chance for the Foundation and Year 1/2 students to come together and celebrate our successes.

Last Friday it was time for 1/2B to lead ‘Celebrating and Showcasing our Classes’. Mr Gallois and Ms R had worked with the students to perform an acknowledgement of country in song. Students sang together and performed a series of hand gestures that matched the song. It was a beautiful display.

Our next cohort assembly will be Friday 31st May at 2:30pm.

Our next grade to showcase their learning will be: 1/2C

Families are most welcome to attend!

Student Leaders

The first of the student leaders for the F-2 area were announced at the last assembly. The students selected as our first leaders are:

Batoul Ali

Laiga Fualaau Masau

Abdihakim Hussein Ali

These students have been selected as they have consistently shown themselves to be leaders in our learning spaces. They embody our school values of kindness, respect, and learning together. They are students that look for ways to make our school and learning spaces tidy, safe, and happy places to be. They push themselves to complete their work to their best ability, while also encouraging those around them to do the same.

Congratulations Laiga, Batoul, and Abdihakim!
