Grade 5 students are reading and analysing Waves by Donna Rawlins. This picture story book is a collection of stories that capture the difficult experiences of immigrants and refugees during the Australian waves of migration. We are analysing vocabulary, figurative language, illustrations, themes and character experiences.
What you can do at home
Ask your child to share the stories they have read from Waves. Share any personal family stories of cultural heritage and experiences of migrating to Australia or other places around the world.
Writing
📸 Writing Snapshot
By the end of this week, your child will have completed an information report on a country of their choice. Please ask your child to share the information report and reflection of their task with you.
Your child should have given you a letter that explains how you can join their Showbie Learning Snapshots folder.
🌱 NUMERACY
Grade 5 students are continuing to break down multiplication worded problems. They are focusing on on the vocabulary of the problems to understand what it is asking them to solve and following place value multiplication strategies to assist them with accurate calcula.
What you can do at home
Along with the weekly 'Mathletics' tasks assigned for homework, students are encouraged to go to the 'My Numeracy' section of Essential Assessment to reinforce the skills and areas taught at school.
🌱 CBL
This term our Big Idea is Diversity, specifically focusing on cultural diversity. Grade 5 and 6 students will explore multicultural Australia, the waves of migration and how this has shaped our country.
Essential Question:
How does cultural diversity shape our identity and sense of belonging?
Guiding Questions:
- What does cultural diversity mean to us?
- How has living in a culturally diverse society enriched our lives?
- What challenges can people face in a culturally diverse society?
- How can we inspire people to value cultural diversity?
This week, Grade 5 students will continue exploring migration stories. They will identify the region each story originates from by marking it on a world map, and discuss how migration affects the main character’s experiences and life.
🌱 HOMEWORK
Students are expected to complete homework on a weekly basis. This consists of
- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice
- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign
- 2 Nessy activities
This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads. Your child's teacher will check this homework on Friday.
🌿 REMINDERS
🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged.
DROP OFF AND PICK UP IN LANTANA
Please be mindful of the road signs on Lantana Road. It is a NO PARKING zone in front of the school during school start and finish times. To ensure a smooth and safe process, we have a designated pick-up system at the end of the day, where a teacher monitors and guides students into cars lined up in the queue. This system works efficiently when there are no parked cars breaching the signage during these times. Thank you for your cooperation.
