Grade 2

Spelling

In spelling this week, we have been focusing on the digraph "ar" and exploring words that end in "y" and "ey". The students have been practising using these patterns when writing words and sentences, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence growing! Our tricky words for the week are "alright," "always," and "said," and we are working hard to use them correctly in our sentences.

Comprehension

In comprehension, we have been learning how to make predictions before and during reading. We have talked about how a prediction is a smart guess about what might happen next, using clues from the text and what we already know. Last week, we read The Barking Dog, a story about a neighbour who was worried about a dog that barked all the time, and we made predictions about how he might solve the problem. This week, we read The Backyard Detectives and predicted what the detectives might find hidden in their backyard. Be sure to ask your child what the detectives discovered — they were very excited about the ending!

Writing

In writing, we have been learning how to create an information report. We are focusing on including an introduction, three facts, and a conclusion. Last week, the students wrote wonderful information reports all about koalas! We watched some informative videos and read fact files to gather interesting facts before writing. The students were especially excited to learn that baby koalas are as small as a jelly bean! This week, we have been researching netball and writing information reports about the sport. It has been fantastic to see the students so eager to learn and share new facts!

Maths

In maths, we have been busy learning all about place value. We started by revising two-digit numbers, making sure we understood how tens and ones work together. We then moved onto three-digit and four-digit numbers, learning how hundreds and thousands fit into the picture. To help reinforce these skills, we have been playing lots of fun and interactive games. It has been wonderful to see the students growing in confidence and enjoying their maths learning!

Let’s Talk

This term, we have been learning about our new wellbeing program at Grayling Primary School called Let's Talk. We discovered that Let's Talk will help us to share our feelings, listen to others, and support our friends. We also learnt about our wonderful Let's Talk Mentors — Grade 5 and 6 students who wear pink vests and are available during recess and lunch. They have been specially trained to help younger students when they are feeling sad, worried, or just need someone to talk to. We read the story Ruby Finds a Worry and created a special craft showing all the trusted people we can talk to if we ever have a worry. It has been such a positive start to building strong connections and supporting each other!

Integrated

In Integrated Studies, we have been exploring how technology has changed from the past to the present. The students have been so interested in learning about the different types of technology that their parents and grandparents used, such as record players, horses and carriages, and old-fashioned telephones. It has sparked lots of wonderful discussions and curiosity about how things have evolved over time. We have loved hearing the students share stories they have gathered from home about old technology!
