Learning, growing and celebrating together...
Dear Sacred Heart Kew Families,
Last weekend, all the adults had BIG decisions to make. On Wednesday, it was our children’s turn (who had even BIGGER decisions on their mind). What to get Mum or that special lady in their life? What does she like? What was her favourite colour again? What did Dad say before I left? I am sure that regardless of what was purchased, Mum will be tickled pink, or blue, perhaps, even yellow!
On Thursday, we welcomed all our mothers’ and special ladies into the classrooms, as our children played host to their special person for the morning. Our Junior children and staff led a touching Mother’s Day paraliturgy in the MPR, followed by a special morning tea afterwards, hosted by our Dads’. May is always ‘M’ for Mum, a beautiful time of the year as we let Mum know just how special and precious she is to us.
We all have memories about Mum or things that remind us of how special our Mum is to us or has been in our life. These might be photos, items, holiday destinations or special places we visited, or perhaps come in the form of a favourite picture story book about Mums. There are a number of these that have been written over the years, and you might have a favourite too? This might have been:
‘My mum’ by Anthony Browne
‘Guess how much I love you’ by Sam McBratney
‘I love you Mum’ by Eric Hill
‘Spot loves his Mum’ by Eric Hill
‘Bluey: My Mum is the best’ by Bob Bilby
Or, it may have been ‘Are you my mother?’ by P.D Eastman (which is mine)
This is my favourite (and one of my strongest memories from my childhood - I remember having this book read to me before bedtime when I was younger). The book explains the bond between mother and child. For those who don’t recall, the story follows a baby bird who hatches while his mother is away from the nest searching for food for her baby. The baby bird goes in search of his mother, asking everyone he meets ‘Are you my mother?’ He encounters a kitten, a hen, a dog, and a cow. He also sees a car, a boat, a plane, even a SNORT (a big digger type machine), asking and wondering ‘Are you my mother?’ The child grows increasingly despondent, and eventually finds itself back in the warmth of home (the nest), after the digger returns him to his nest, just in time for his real mother to come back. The joyful reunion portrays the sheer beauty of maternal love, which is just one of the many elements we all celebrate and remember each Mother’s Day (and reminds me of the time I became lost at Chirnside Park Shopping Centre many years ago, after straying from my big bird).
To all our Sacred Heart Kew mothers and those who play mothering roles in our lives, may you receive much love and attention this Mothers’ Day. Thank you for all that you do for us and for the joy that you bring to us each and every day. We particularly remember those beautiful mothers’ whose memory we hold near and dear to us at this time every year, who may not physically be with us any longer, but who live on in our hearts forever. Thank you to all our Mum’s for your constant love and support. May this Sunday be a celebration of all your beauty, warmth and true worth.
Wishing everyone a lovely Mother’s Day weekend.
Kind Regards,
Ed Weekes
