Term 2 Physical Education Overviews

PREP
During term 2 in Prep, students will explore and practise fundamental movement skills such as running, and jumping specifically as well as working on balancing, and basic throwing and catching. Through structured play and simple movement activities, they will begin to move their bodies in different ways and learn to control their movements in safe, open spaces. Prep students will develop awareness of body control, personal space, and safe participation. They will begin to describe how their body feels during movement and will be encouraged to cooperate with others through games and activities.
YEAR 1
During term2, Year 1 students will continue to develop fundamental movement skills with a focus on running, jumping in particular as well as balancing, and underarm throwing and catching. They will practise movement sequences through stations, games, and mini challenges. students will explore movement strategies, begin to apply effort and body awareness, and reflect on how movement helps them play and learn with others. They will also be encouraged to cooperate, share equipment, and follow simple rules while developing confidence in physical activity.
YEAR 2
During term 2, Year 2 students will refine and apply a range of fundamental movement skills specifically in running and jumping with agility as well as dodging, landing safely from a jump, accurate throwing, and catching while moving. They will participate in movement stations, group games, and cooperative tasks designed to challenge their coordination and control. Students will begin to propose and apply movement strategies, use feedback to improve their skills, and reflect on their own and others’ performance. There will be a focus on teamwork, safe participation, and understanding how movement contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
YEAR 3
During the course of term 2 year 3 students will be focusing on athletics and fundamental movement skills. Students will participate in athletic events such as high jump, shotput and discus. Students will focus on each event for a certain period of time before moving on to the next one. These events will also help develop their fundamental movement skills such as jumping, running, throwing and balance. Students will practice their fundamental movement skills through different movement situations as well as create and perform movement sequences within athletics. Students will practice and explore the different techniques done for each athletic event. All Year 3 students will also compete in our school Cross Country carnival where 9/10 yr olds will run/walk/jog 2000m.
YEAR 4
During the course of term 2 year 4 students will be focusing on athletics and fundamental movement skills. Students will participate in athletic events such as high jump, shotput and discus. Students will focus on each event for a certain period of time before moving on to the next one. These events will also help develop their fundamental movement skills such as jumping, running, throwing and balance. Students will practice and refine their fundamental movement skills through different movement situations as well as create and perform movement sequences within athletics. Students will practice and refine the different techniques for each athletic event reflecting on how they can improve. All Year 4 students will also compete in our school Cross Country carnival where 9/10 yr olds will run/walk/jog 2000m.
YEAR 5
In Term 2, Year 5 students will begin to perform and refine fundamental movement skills while focusing on the topic of Athletics, in particular, when children provide feedback on their peers Shot Put, Discus and High jump techniques in preparation for their school Athletics carnival. Students will learn how to safely perform the discus throw using modified (foam or rubber) equipment. They will focus on a correct side-on stance and grip, coordinated body rotation, flat and controlled release and aiming for accuracy before building distance. Students will develop the proper Shot Put “push” technique, with an emphasis on holding the shot correctly against the neck, using a power position with bent knees, extending through the arm and legs to “push” rather than “throw” and understanding force, balance, and control. Students will work on jumping technique using a scissor-style approach suited to their development level. Key skills include safe take-off and landing, coordinated arm and leg movement, practising rhythm and run-up patterns and developing confidence in jumping at increasing heights. All Year 5 students will also compete in our school Cross Country carnival where 9/10 yr olds will run/walk/jog 2000m while 11 yr olds will run/walk/jog 3000m.
YEAR 6
In Term 2, Year 6 students will continue to refine their fundamental movement skills to complete a series of complex movement sequences. These will then be applied across a number of Athletic events such as Shot Put, Discus and High Jump in preparation for their school Athletics carnival. Students will refine their Discus grip and side-on stance for greater consistency, learn to coordinate a controlled body rotation and timed release, focus on increasing distance and accuracy through improved power transfer and follow-through and analysing how angle of release and body positioning affect performance. Progressing from the basic Shot Put 'push' technique learnt previously, students will refine the “power position” with correct weight transfer, explore the use of the glide technique as an introduction to more advanced throwing mechanics, increase throwing distance through better sequencing and body coordination and engage in self and peer analysis using visual or verbal feedback. Students will advance from the High Jump scissor technique to experimenting with refined run-up patterns and take-off angles, enhanced body control during flight and landing, understand how timing, speed, and rhythm contribute to clearing greater heights, exploring the Fosbury Flop using soft mats (depending on confidence and safety). All Year 6 students will also compete in our school Cross Country carnival where both 11 yr olds and 12/13 yr olds will run/walk/jog 3000m.
Health
Year 7
During term two, students in year 7 are investigating health-related fitness components and how these components aid them in maintaining their health and well-being. Students will analyse their physical activity levels, determine what health-related fitness components they regularly use and what they could improve. Students will design a plan to improve their physical activity by focusing on improving health-related fitness components.
Year 8
During term two, students in year 8 are investigating the Skill-Related components of fitness; they will explore what specific fitness components are required to be successful athletes in rugby, basketball, and athletics. Students will analyse fitness testing data from elite athletes and identify areas needed for improvement. Students will design a training program for a specific athlete to help that athlete make improvements in the identified areas.
Year 9
During term two, students in year 9 are investigating the components of fitness. They will use the prior knowledge gained in years 7 and 8 to identify a component of fitness they wish to improve, design a fitness testing protocol and create a training program to enhance their selected fitness area. Students will use pre-test and post-test data to justify if their training program was successful in improving their fitness.
Physical Education
During term two, students in years 7-9 will participate in the Cross-Country event. They will participate in fitness testing to gain an understanding of how and why fitness is measured. Students will also explore various Net and Wall games, learning how to manipulate objects over nets, how to move into space in an attempt to score, and how to communicate with teammates to set up tactics to defend and score against an opponent.
Year 8 SEL
During term 2, year 8 students will explore why resilience is a key characteristic for the 21st century. They will investigate strategies to build resilience and participate in activities designed to develop their coping skills, increasing their ability to overcome challenges.
Term 2 Interschool Sport
Year 7 & 8
During term two, students in years 7 and 8 will explore AFL and Soccer. The Year 7 and 8 Representative teams will compete in the district, Netball, Badminton, AFL and Soccer competitions
Year 9
During Term two, students will compete in the district Badminton competitions
