Term 2 Visual Arts  Overviews

TERM TWO – VISUAL ARTS OVERVIEWS

Grade Prep

In Term 2, Prep students will explore colour as one of the seven elements of art, focusing on painting. They will learn about primary and secondary colours and how to use them to create artworks. Through hands-on activities, students will practice fine motor skills and experiment with patterns using a variety of materials. They will also explore how colours can reflect emotions, helping them make more intentional artistic choices. As part of their learning, students will develop their brushstroke techniques and become more confident in mixing colours to create different effects.

Grade 1

In Term 2, Grade 1 will focus on the art process of collage to manipulate, assemble, and attach materials on a surface. Students will build an understanding of the art elements of shape and space while learning to organize material using the correct adhesives. They will learn how paper can be arranged in different ways, such as cutting, tearing, and layering, to create visual effects. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Eric Carle and Henri Matisse and following the concept statement from their Unit of Inquiry- our senses help us inform about the world, the Grade 1 cohort will create a collage artwork that will express the five senses: touch, taste, sight, sound, and smell.

Grade 2

Students will begin T2 by exploring the colour wheel, learning to mix colours to represent the world around us. For example, "what happens when I add green and blue? what if I add red to tint a green colour?" They will experiment with watercolour techniques, improving brush control and applying paint neatly. In guided practice, students will create texture and space; and observe how other artists communicate meaning. By responding to artworks and reflecting on their own process, students will grow in confidence in represent ideas using colour, shape, and space. The unit final tropical fish painting will showcase their consolidating skills and artistic choices, which will be presented to their peers.

GRADE 3

Throughout this term, students will undertake two units within Visual Art: Print-making and Collage. In the Print-making unit students will learn about 4 different types of printmaking. Gelli-plates, stamping, foam carving and found objects. They will learn the difference between printmaking and painting. Students will make a range of patterned and coloured papers to use in the second part of the term where they will move onto collage. During the Collage unit, students will learn about artists who are influential in this field. They will learn a variety of techniques, culminating in the creation of a finished, collage artwork.

GRADE 4

Throughout this term students in Year 4 will undertake a water colour painting unit. They will investigate Colour Theory and water colour painting techniques. They will be introduced to a variety of additional materials and techniques that can be used to enhance their artwork such as adding salt, using plastic wrap etc. Students will explore a variety of Australian water colour artists past and present and use their increasing knowledge and skills to create their own uniquely Australian water colour piece.

Grade 5

In Term 2, Grade 5 will focus on the art concept of clay modelling while focusing on the art elements of form and shape. Students will learn the basic properties of clay and practice the fundamental hand-building techniques. They will also explore the correct methods for joining and carving clay using additive and subtractive methods. The practical knowledge will support students to work towards the final clay product for the term, sculpting an Australian coin, which will be based on the key learning area of history from their Unit of Inquiry.

GRADE 6

Throughout this term students in Year 6 will further develop their knowledge of colour theory and acrylic painting techniques. They will explore Colour Theory including colour mixing, mixing tints and shades and the psychology behind colour.  Students will undertake an investigation into abstract art, becoming familiar with influential artists in this field. They will develop their knowledge of composition and apply their knowledge of colour, composition and non-representational abstract art to create two abstract art pieces.
