Year 6 Term 2 Overviews

WOMINJEKA

Wominjeka and welcome to Term 2 at DCC! We are impressed with how our Year 6 students have smoothly transitioned back to school after the holidays. The classrooms are filled with excited conversations around our new learning experiences of the term, as well as anticipation for what is to come.

Term 2 Learning

Literacy

This term in Reading we are exploring characters and events from different historical, cultural or social contexts to build literal and inferred meaning. This exploration will focus on using a wide range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Australian and World authors. In Writing, students will then experiment with language features and literary devices through the lens of biographies and historical narratives. This will tie into our Unit of Inquiry, where students will be exploring a multicultural Australia through migration stories.

Numeracy

Students have begun this term by expanding their understanding of measurement, and applying their knowledge of multiplicative thinking to solve practical measurement problems. They will then investigate 3D shapes and how these can be represented using volume and capacity. A large focus this term will be on algebraic operations and their application of fractional thinking in mathematical problems. This will be rounded out by a short unit on time, with a focus on time tables and elapsed time.

Inquiry

Students are inquiring into the concept of citizenship, and how this is influenced by migration, peoples’ rights and responsibilities, and cultural and social perspectives. This will be presented through migration stories that will be investigated within Literacy.

Social & Emotional Learning

In Term 2 students will continue building a deep understanding of how to create a positive learning environment through our school values.

  • SWPBS (School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support) – Encouraging kindness, through social interactions.
  • PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) – Exploring the diversity of people through individual, social and cultural contexts.
  • RRRR (Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships) – Understanding gender norms, stereotypes and positive gender relations.

This is another busy term filled with lots of learning opportunities. In week 4 of this term students will participate in the “Project Rockit's UNITE Workshop”. Where students will build a shared understanding of what bullying is and how it impacts those targeted. Students will be empowered with strategies to promote a culture of taking action to support each other. Later in the term, selected students will also be part of the Winter Interschool Sports Day.
