Year 5 Term 2 Overview
Term 2 is a busy and exciting one in Year 5. Here is a short overview of what we will be focussing on.
Literacy
Throughout Term 2 in Literacy students will come to a greater understanding of the connection between reading and writing. They will compare discussion and persuasive texts and identify their similarities and differences. Students will pull apart the features of discussion texts and analyse them in order to gain a greater understanding of their structure. They will also plan, draft and edit and revise their own discussion texts. They will analyse primary and secondary sources to gain an understanding of points of view. Students will infer use a variety of strategies and tools to research a topic efficiently. They will understand and explain the structure, language features and purpose of reviews. This will coincide with students planning, drafting, editing and revising their own reviews.
Numeracy
In Maths during Term 2 students will focus on solving problems that involve the four operations (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division). They will recognise and explain the relationship between multiplication and division and use this understanding to build family facts. Students will explore measurement through measuring the degrees of angles, length, perimeter, area, mass, time and capacity. They will explore symmetry, transformation and connect nets to 3D objects.
SEL
SEL in Term 2 will focus on students keeping safe when online and identify strategies for conflict resolution. They will identify and explain different emotions and explore strategies to cope with different emotions of varying levels. Students will identify different types of health, explain who/what influences their health and how to pratice healthy habits.
Inquiry
During Term 2 in Inquiry students are covering a social responsibility unit which has a focus on history. They will look at the period of Australian history from 1800 through to Federation in 1901. Students will explore major historical events during this time period through a variety of perspectives (British, Indigenous, miners [both Anglo and Chinese], convicts and settlers). They will also explore the factors that led to the Federation of the colonies to become the nation that we now know as Australia. Students will also participate in a Digital Incursion by the Immigration Museum, which will focus on the journey from London to Melbourne by a free settler in the 1850s.
