Grade 1 & 2
Term 2
Can you believe it’s already Week Four? Time is flying! We’ve had so many special learning experiences so far, and we’re truly grateful for your continued support. Thank you for being such an important part of our school community!
We are excited to share what your children have been working on in class!
In reading, our students have been actively engaged in expanding their vocabulary and exploring the meaning of words they encounter in various texts. This focus not only strengthens their language skills but also enhances their comprehension and interpretation of what they read. In addition, students have been developing essential reading strategies, including identifying main ideas and key details, retelling stories in the correct sequence, and recognizing important story elements such as characters, setting, and plot. These skills play a vital role in deepening their understanding and overall enjoyment of reading.
In writing, our Grade 1 students are continuing to build their writing skills by crafting Super Sentences—sentences that begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop. They are also writing their own Narratives that include an Introduction, a Problem, and a Resolution. We’re encouraging the use of descriptive words to add detail and depth to their stories. In grammar, we’re exploring: Proper use of punctuation and identifying and using nouns (people, places, and things), verbs (action words), and adjectives (describing words). Students are actively engaged in hands-on activities to recognize spelling patterns and word families. They have also been further developing skills in building and decoding new words, strengthening phonemic awareness and sound-letter relationships.
Grade 2's have been learning about procedural writing and each wrote a procedure for making the best ice cream sundae. Students were sure to include a title, ingredients and materials, numbered steps in order and any tips or warnings at the end.
Our Grade 1 students have been actively practicing their skip counting, addition, and subtraction computations using a variety of engaging materials. They are also working through word problems to apply their mathematical thinking in real-life contexts.
In addition, we’ve started a new and exciting topic in our learning journey. Students are learning how to explain and follow simple directions, as well as describe where objects are using positional language. They are gaining confidence in giving and following instructions using the language of position and direction.
Thank you for your continued support!
Grade 2s are working on subtraction and have been using hundreds charts, numberlines, split strategies and vertical subtraction to solve various problems. Students have enjoyed a range of hands on activities, including getting outside and drawing open numberlines and making jumps by 10s and 1s to solve our subtraction problems.
Our Grade 1 students had a wonderful time participating in a special craft activity this week! Using a variety of paper crafts and mixed materials, the children created beautiful Mother’s Day pictures filled with love and creativity.
They were assisted by their buddies, who helped guide them through their designs. The room was filled with laughter and warm conversations as everyone shared their excitement about the upcoming special weekend. It was a heartwarming experience for all!
