Mental Health and Wellbeing in Primary Schools

Supporting children’s mental health is essential for their learning, growth, and overall flourishing. When students experience a strong sense of wellbeing, they are more equipped to manage challenges, connect with others, and realise their potential. Schools are in a unique position to foster mental health and wellbeing, but without the right resources and support, teachers can feel underprepared to respond to the increasing mental health needs of their students. The Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) initiative was developed by paediatricians, educators, psychologists, researchers, and teachers to address this need. Mental Health and Wellbeing Leaders (MHWLs) help schools implement sustainable practices that nurture wellbeing at every level.

As part of our commitment to Student Wellbeing, we have recently completed training to become a Peaceful Kids school. The 'Peaceful Kids' program is a Mindfulness and Positive Psychology based program to lessen anxiety and stress and increase resilience in children. This program helps children to build their emotional resilience so they are better equipped to deal with the day to day stresses that life brings them.

Peaceful Kids Wellbeing Groups will begin at Sacred Heart in the coming weeks. Teachers have worked with the Diversity and Wellbeing team leaders to identify some students who would benefit from this program. Parents will be emailed for consent and the program will run over 6-8 weeks for approximately 45 minutes per week.

We are so excited to bring this program to Sacred Heart!
