Dear Sacred Heart Families,
Many of us rose on Friday morning to the exciting news that the Catholic Church has a new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost. In his first speech to the College of Cardinals, Pope Leo recalled the words of Pope Paul VI in 1963 of his own inauguration:
‘May it pass over the whole world like a great flame of faith and love kindled in all men and women of good will. May it shed light on paths of mutual cooperation and bless humanity abundantly, now and always, with the very strength of God, without whose help nothing is valid, nothing is holy’ (Message Qui fausto die addressed to the entire human family, 22 June 1963).
In the appointment of a new Pope, I have reflected on my role as a School Principal of a Catholic school and wondered what this means for me in my leadership and for the broader school community. Through the words of both Pope Francis and Pope Leo, I am reminded that the mission of Sacred Heart is not only to educate but also to light in our children a flame of faith and love — to ensure that everything we do in our school and beyond reflects the light of Christ. This flame is kindled in small acts of kindness, in courageous conversations, in our prayers and in our commitment to the dignity of each person, both adult and child.
The call to mutual cooperation speaks directly to how we work together as a school community walking with a shared vision and mission, listening intently to one another and building a community of trust and respect.
We are also reminded of our need for God’s strength. In a busy world full of competing demands, we pause to remember that our greatest strength, comes not from ourselves but through God's presence in all we do. As we begin this new chapter under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV, may we continue to be a people of Jesus Christ and reflect his love for all.
Continuing on with the theme of significant religious appointments, last Sunday the parish community of St Joseph's gathered to witness the installation of Fr Samuel by Bishop Martin Ashe. It was a beautiful mass and it was clear to see how moved Fr Samuel was in taking on this significant role as spiritual and faith leader for our parish and school communities of Sacred Heart and St Margaret Mary's.
We congratulate Fr Samuel on his appointment. We are very fortunate as a school and parish to have Fr Samuel guiding us in our faith and supporting our school with such commitment and generosity of spirit.
Congratulations to the Year 6 students of Sacred Heart and Saint Margaret Mary's who received the Sacrament of Confirmation last Friday night. It was a significant step in their journey of faith, strengthened by the Holy Spirit and embraced by school and parish community. May they continue to grow in wisdom, courage and love as they live out their faith each day. It was a sacred event made all the more special by being at the beautiful St Patrick's Cathedral of Melbourne & the presence of family and friends, staff & Fr Samuel & Bishop Martin Ashe. We are so proud of you— May God bless you always.
We warmly welcome Elly Goding & Brett Henderson who have been appointed as Year 5 teachers after Dawn was unable to continue in her role. Whilst we are sorry to see Dawn leave, we are excited and grateful to welcome Elly and Brett to our school community.
A huge thank you to Therese, Erin, Kim, Cath and Michael for your support in ensuring the teaching and learning program & routines were able to continue for the students with as little disruption as possible.
We look forward to getting to know Elly and Brett more as they settle into life at Sacred Heart.
A huge congratulations to Allura Presti (Year 5T) for making the Australian gymnastics team recently. Allura will represent Australia in Poland and Germany this June and can be seen at the top of this image to the right.
We are very happy for Allura and her team mates and wish them all the very best in their upcoming competition.
