Year Five - Spotlight on Learning
Bethany Community
Dear Bethany Families,
This week our students attended an excursion to the Melbourne Museum and Federation Square. It was a fun and educational day filled with discovery, creativity, and connection to our curriculum.
Our visit to the Melbourne Museum gave students the chance to explore a wide range of exhibitions, including the Dinosaur Walk, First Peoples, and the Forest Gallery. These displays sparked curiosity and provided a hands-on experience with science, history, and culture. In the First Peoples Gallery, students deepened their understanding of Aboriginal history and culture, which ties in closely with the learning of writing a factual recount about Jandamarra, a legend of the Bunuba people. At Federation Square, students enjoyed a guided tour of the architecture and public spaces. To finish off the day, we had dinner at TAP Restaurant where students had the chance to share highlights from the day and enjoy a meal together. Everyone showed the St Thomas way demonstrating Safety, Respect and Learning with a wonderful day enjoyed by all.
Religious Education Focus:
In preparation for our upcoming Mass, students will be learning about the story of Saul’s conversion (Acts 9:1–20). Through Scripture, discussion, and reflection, students will consider how God's love and purpose can bring about powerful change in anyone who is open to Him. Students will also learn about Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples marking the beginning of the Church and empowering the disciples to spread Jesus' message to all people.
English Focus
We will continue reading our second novel study for the term, Dirrarn, the sequel to Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler. Students will be completing writing a factual recount about Jandamarra, a significant Aboriginal resistance fighter.
Mathematics Focus
In Week 5, students will be extending their understanding of Time by interpreting 24-hour timetables and creating schedules.
Auslan Focus
Next week in Auslan, students will be learning how to translate the word ‘you’ into a pronoun sign using eye contact. They'll explore how this works in signing and practise useful everyday phrases such as:
Social/ Emotional Learning Focus
Next week, students will practice their practical thinking skills. They will participate in role-plays and demonstrate different ways to understand and manage their emotions, particularly around problem-solving and handling stress. Students will learn to identify different situations and contexts that can cause stress and share examples of common stressors in their lives.
