SAINTS BOARDING

News from Brett Toombs

Director of Boarding

Exeat weekend information

An exeat weekend has just begun, but only for the boys as Saints has a student-free day on Monday. Therefore, boys residences will not reopen until 3pm on Monday August 12. If your sons are flying back into Cairns earlier that day because of flight availability, arrangements will be made to collect them if required. I reiterate - the boys residences will not be open until Monday at 3pm.

St Monica’s College does not have a student-free day on Monday, as there are several scheduled activities such as camps and retreats. As a result, girls residences will reopen at 4pm on Sunday. Again, if your daughters are flying back on the Sunday and arrive earlier due to availability of flights, transport and staffing will be available.

Families, please email return flight itineraries to respective heads of residence.

Weekends in boarding

The scheduled exeat weekend and two free weekends per term provide our boarders with three opportunities to submit leave requests to stay with approved families and friends. Our normal weekends rely on all boarders staying in. Heads of residence and I understand that some family situations require boarders to be out at specific times during these weekends. However, ideally, all boarders are expected in residence outside of free and exeat weekends.

Academic Effort Awards

Last Sunday, we acknowledged and presented certificates to our boarders who received Academic Effort Awards. These certificates were based on their work habits from Semester 1 day-school reports. Any student who received one or more Excellent achievements in their application to study were presented with a certificate. Congratulations to the following boys:

Boarders free weekend camp

St Augustine’s and St Monica’s will have a long free weekend at the end of Week 8 as Friday is a student-free day for both colleges. Boarders who stay in will enjoy a relaxing two-night camp at Genazzano on the Atherton Tablelands, which will be a highlight for many.

Sunday night boarders Mass

Sunday night chapel is compulsory for all boarders, and they must be back in residence by 5:45pm. Families, please ensure that your sons and daughters are back in time on these weekends for our community dinner followed by Mass.

Boarding visits

We have travelled to the Tablelands and Thursday Island this term for our boarding trips, and these have been wonderful opportunities to visit our current families and to talk to students from local primary schools. Saints boarding staff, Mrs Webster, Mrs Krause and Mrs See Kee were fortunate to have spent time on Thursday Island last week catching up with prospective and current families.

Saturday outings

There's never time to be bored in boarding.  In the past few weeks, our boarders have visited Nandroya Falls, Defy Gravity Centre, Yungaburra Markets and Tolga. These are always good days with plenty of social activity. We also look forward to hosting a boarding camp, as mentioned above, on the long free weekend at the end of Week 8.
