Cultural Liaison

Carevan

Matt Gatt the ‘Chef’ at Marian Catholic College, once again preps the ingredients for Carevan, and organised the cooking station/bays for the community action students and teachers who volunteered their time and efforts to help with this great cause. There is always so much joy when cooking for Carevan. On the first day of caravan, students and staff got the privilege to meet Janice Sartor who coordinates Carevan Griffith.  Janice Sartor is the coordinator or Carevan Griffith who liaises with the local community and schools to gain their support in volunteering to help out with Carevan in the community or part of a school project. Marian gives back with the generosity of their time, efforts, care, love and kindness in helping our community who are in need.

White Card Course

The white card course has been a big hit this year at Marian with so many students wanting to get on board to get their white card to help build their life skills or career paths when finishing school or completing an apprentice or traineeship.  The students learnt the knowledge and skills to work safely in a construction industry. The white card course is a basic entry level course covering personal awareness, basic risk management, hazard identification and emergencies.

At Marian, the white card course will run every term this year, and this term we have 15 students attending the course on Thursday 8 August, and coordinated with WRCC (Western Riverina Community College).

‘Girls Can Too Program’

Is a program that promotes women in trade careers. 15 students (Year 10-12) participate in different trade tasters, work readiness, site visits and work experience. The program is completely free for students, and the 6 girls from Marian who were attending, committed going to tafe every Wednesday for 9 weeks.

Prior to commencing in the program, all 6 girls completed the white card course at Marian and were also provided with hi-vis shirt, long pants and boots, and every Wednesday, the girls and other two schools included were also provided with morning tea and lunches for each TAFE day.

The Program included;

  • Work Readiness, Industry Tours
  • Construction
  • Work Readiness, Industry Tours
  • Plumbing
  • Engineering
  • Electrotechnology
  • Automotive (Heavy Vehicle)
  • Work Experience
  • Graduation

Mrs Lole supervised the students every Wednesday at Tafe and observed how the 6 students grew with confidence and accelerated in their projects. The first week, the girls made a glazing board, perfect for a ‘Mother’s’ day gift. The girls were so involved in keen to finish their projects, they learnt how to use different tools, and were so persistent and interested in learning about work readiness, construction, plumbing, engineering, electrotechnology, automotive-heavy vehicle, and built the confidence talking to employers about availability of work experience and traineeships/apprenticeship within their organisation.

These students who were given the opportunity are as follows, Narin Ciyan, Gemma Lynch, Isabella Sartor, Amber Sayers, Nancy Tietie and Taina Tuibenau.

This program was funded and each of these students selected by Mrs Munro and Mrs Lole were given the opportunity to learn a whole new industry of skills and knowledge.

Many thanks to Katie Friedlieb from the Regional Industry Education Partnerships for reaching out and giving our students an experience, while also attending school on the other days and to Mel Marin who looked after the girls with her hospitality and catering and made us feel welcome and to the Receptionist Dee who would ensure the girls were in attendance.

All 6 students achieved their goals and most got the opportunity to do work experience at the industries which were visited during the industry tour.

IT Sessions For Seniors

This year with the IT Session it has been a slow progress but re-assuring as we have had some of our local seniors drop into the Griffith Library to get assistance with their telecommunication devices and learn new IT Skills, taught by our very own MCC students from the Community Action Team.

Study Club

We commenced study club in Term 2 of week 3, and it has been growing since it was implemented as the homework club back in 2015. The students are always willing to attend and focus on their studies as well as getting feedback for their assessments from the year 12 leadership team.

The study club at MCC runs on a Tuesday from week 3 every term, from 3:15 until 4:30 p. We welcome new and current students from all years to attend.

We would like to acknowledge and thank Dahlia Abbas, Ross Aloniu, Aotearoa Filipo, Rebecca Ikenasio, Taylor Leilua, Lilliana Rokov, Jannet Tapumania, Odena Tavita, and Alexandra Yardley whom assisted through this year, and we wish the year 12’s best of luck with their trial exams this term.
