GTAC YEAR 11 BIOLOGY

GTAC VISIT

Year 11 Biology students travelled to Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) today to undertake an inquiry into prenatal and predictive genetic testing as part of Unit 2 Biology.

In this program students were exposed to a variety of genetic testing practices. Students learnt about the Guthrie test, used to diagnose if babies have the Phenylketonuria (PKU) phenotype. They investigated the inheritance of this disease and used fluorescence microscopy to view the results of Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridisation (FISH) genetic tests to diagnose the chromosome abnormality in embryos.

A great learning opportunity for these Biologists towards their Unit 2 studies!
