Learning Centre One

Welcome back to Term 3! The preps have come back with a positive outlook on learning and have settled well into the term. It has been great hearing all of the stories of the adventures that happened over the holiday break.

The preps participated in an author visit from Adam Wallace. They have been exploring his books during reading and have enjoyed the fun nature and excitement that he writes into his books. The preps met Adam and learned about the books he has written and got a crash course into how to draw pictures that show a range of emotions. The students giggled and laughed throughout their interactions with Adam and enjoyed their time with him.

During literacy the students have been learning and recapping on phonics sounds that have been learned and have been looking deeper into, graph, digraph and trigraphs. They have been engaging in rotations to reinforce their sound knowledge and understanding. In reading, the students have explored a range of Adam Wallace texts and used them to revisit and explore the skills of predicting, how to develop an opinion and a text's purpose. Within writing the students have been using aspects of the texts they have been exploring to plan, write and create their own trap to catch a tooth fairy or Dragon. The students explored how to label, use their labels in a sentence and explain how their trap will work.

In Math the students have been investigating 2D and 3D shapes. The students explored a range of 2D shapes and used them to create their own shape lion. They then explored how they can use a range of shapes to make their own shape person. The students then explored the properties of shapes and classified them according to their sides and vertices. The students then explored 3D shapes and explored how to make them using wooden sticks and playdoh and made a 3D cube.

Throughout Religion the students have been exploring stories that have been exploring the concept that there are people who believed in God before us. The students explode the stories of Abraham and Sarah and the story of Samuel. The students participated in Godly play and asked questions about the stories in response to what they had read and learned.

DIVISIONAL TEEBALL and HOCKEY

After our participation in the Winter Gala sports day last term, some of our students progressed through to the divisional rounds. Two of our teeball teams travelled to President's Park last Thursday and were blessed with a beautiful sunny day to compete on. Our girl's hockey team were not so lucky as they played yesterday in the cold and rain. All students played skillfully and with great respect for other teams and umpires. Unfortunately, they won't be progressing through to the next round however all who attended were very proud of the efforts they gave to all of their matches. Well done!!

LITERACY - ADAM WALLACE

On Monday, the 5/6 students were super excited to meet Adam Wallace, author of 'Zombie Inspiration' which they have been reading together during Literacy lessons. Adam spoke to the students about how to overcome writer's block by using their everyday experiences but changing one element to come up with a funny story. He led them through some drawing challenges where they had to draw animal creations within a time limit and with their eyes closed. They then followed his step-by-step instructions to draw a cartoon vampire bat.

MATHS

This week, some of our students have been using scales to measure the mass of objects around the classroom. They have made some estimations and then recorded their findings. They have also used unifix blocks to measure the capacity of different containers.

'In maths, we have been looking at measurement (time, mass & capacity). Students have thoroughly enjoyed doing hands-on activities throughout the last two weeks with Chelsea and Selena. It has been great to see them involved and showing confidence within their learning.'

CHINESE MUSEUM EXCURSION 1

Yesterday, half of the 5/6 students braved the cold weather and headed into the city for an exciting day organised by Fan. They caught the train and spent some time at the Chinese Museum looking at ancient artefacts. The students also enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Chine on Paramount Chinese restaurant.

Learning Centre Three

Welcome back to Term 3!

It has been a smooth transition back to school and students have settled in well this Term.

We were all very excited to have a visit by Adam Wallace. We were able to listen about how to write a story and had a go at drawing our own characters.

We have continued our Author study on Adam Wallace and had so much fun when he came to visit us on Monday. We found out how he gets his ideas for writing and how to draw characters.

During maths we have been exploring shapes! We have looked at how to classify shapes, how many sides they have and how many corners they have. We have created our own community using shapes and many other things.

In Religion, we have discussed what communities we are a part of and what it means to be a part of those communities.

For Inquiry, we started off big! We looked at the world, then the continents and then focused on Australia and our local area.

For Wellbeing, we developed ways we can help others and ourselves deal with stress. We shared different techniques that work for us.

We ended the week with an excursion that took us through the history of Wyndham. We had a guided tour of the Werribee Historical Museum and then explored the main street and different landmarks that made up our local history.

Learning Centre Four

Greetings from everyone in Learning Centre 4. It has been a successful start to Term 3 with all our students returning to school with enthusiasm. We have enjoyed a visit from author Adam Wallace, and celebrated First Eucharist for some of our students.

Literacy

In literacy we have been focusing on a range of entertaining books by author Adam Wallace. Students have been working with some books from his “How to Catch” series to practise their comprehension techniques and narrative writing. They have enjoyed innovating their own stories using some pictures from his books.

Adam Wallace Visit

Our students were also lucky enough to have been given the opportunity to meet Adam Wallace. He joined us in the school gym on Monday the 22nd of July and shared some valuable tips for aspiring authors. The students greatly enjoyed asking him questions, hearing stories and doing some creative drawing with him.

Numeracy

In numeracy our students have been learning about number patterns and multiplication. They have been practising skip counting, repeated addition, equal groups and using arrays to understand multiplication problems. They have also been working on their fluency with mental multiplication.

Inquiry

In inquiry our students have been learning about Australian geography. They have been looking at creating maps of Australia that include state borders, capitals, and major natural / man-made landmarks. They have also been working on making brochures of the different states and territories of Australia. Our students will be working on these over the coming weeks and are working hard to learn many exciting facts about Australia.

Religion

In religion our students have been learning about the hierarchy of the Catholic Church and the life of Mary Mackillop. They have learnt about St Andrews Parish, the Melbourne Archdiocese, and the Global Church as well as the roles,  people, services they provide. Students have also learnt about Mary Mackillop, her life, and contributions to the Church and people across Australia.

First Eucharist

On Sunday the 21st of July we had a wonderful celebration of many of our students' First Eucharists at this month’s Community Mass. It was a pleasant service conducted by Father Albert and had a wonderful turn out from many students and families in our community. Well done to those students and families that have continued their journey in the Catholic faith.

Wellbeing

In wellbeing we have been continuing to learn about our school values and expectations from the school matrix. Over the past few weeks we have focused on safety and our students maintaining safe behaviour and seeking help from a trusted source when they feel unsafe.

Camp

This Tuesday evening we had our camp parent meeting in preparation for our 3/4 camp later this term. Thanks to all those who were able to join us for this. Please find attached here a copy of the presentation to refer to. Within the presentation there is also a handy 'What to pack' list.
