Dear Families,
Jack Frost has paid us all a visit this week! Despite the very chilly mornings, it has been great to see the sunshine and the wind die down for us. It has made for a more comfortable week. Can you believe that August is already here?
On Monday this week, Miss Kylie and I had the pleasure of attending the State Principal’s Conference alongside over two and a half thousand Government School Principals. We heard from The Minister for Education and the Deputy Secretary about the strength in Victorian Schools and how we continue to achieve fantastic student outcomes, despite a number of workforce challenges. It was reassuring to hear about new developments in State Education that align with best practice Literacy. Phonics, explicit teaching, phonological awareness and other practices that Dana Street has been implementing for the last couple of years, are all becoming increasingly adopted throughout Victoria. Whilst our school continues to refine our instructional practice, it is nice to know we are heading in the right direction.
Unfortunately, there has been considerable sickness still plaguing our school this week. I am hearing from concerned parents about lingering coughs, chest infections and children who are naturally fatigued and just want to get better. We have reminder our students about the need for good hygiene and would appreciate conversations at home occurring, also.
Wednesday afternoon saw our 5/6A students conduct a short flash mob for our community as part of their Performing Arts lessons. Beforehand, the students indicated some nerves and worry, they all did a fantastic job to the cheers of the parents and community. Well done, 5/6A!
I was very proud last week when our Debating Team took to the podium at the annual South Street Debating Competition. We came up against last year’s victors, which was always going to be a difficult and challenging endeavour. The topic “Competitive Sport Should be Banned at Schools” evoked some great discussion and debate from both the teams. Ella, Maeve, Ava and Evelyn all did a fantastic job in their respective roles.
Have a fantastic weekend 😊
Ryan
