Amazing Drumming Monkeys

The children in our Early Learning Centre, demonstrate they learn and thrive through play. When we add music to our play, a transformation emerges in our children; they become alive and ready for anything. Music has this incredible ability to make learning fun. Because it is interactive, it allows children to find their individual creativity and connect with others. Honestly, who doesn’t enjoy music? Combine this with dancing or physical movement and you are kicking goals!

To engage the children in a fun, interactive and educational experience, we invited The Amazing Drumming Monkeys to impart their wisdom, joy, humour and musicality with us in Week 7 of this term. Using a simple beat of the drum, the children connected with Congo and Bongo, the hairy stars of the show. Denoting their developing listening skills, the children tapped, clapped and beat bongo drums to the rhythm of the percussion instruments.

With an underlying environmental message, children shared with the educators later, that the “turtle jumping in the water”, "the monkey opening the compost bin”, and the "worm inside the green bin”, “he was trying to eat the plastic bottle”, were a few of their highlights from the show.

To connect our learners further, we engaged in a group activity outdoors, collecting items from around the outdoor play area. This demonstrated that we do not need our own drum to play music. Instead, we can explore our environment, and with a touch of creativity and imagination, anything can, indeed, become a musical instrument.

We will continue to reflect on how we can each play a role in our environment to help serve, protect, and care for our garden, our environment in our community, and beyond. After all, it is even in the very first book of the Bible: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15 (NIV)

God instructs us to take care of the earth, and so we will continue to teach, play and care for our ELC garden in many fun and creative ways. After all, we are building a nation of future caretakers and building hearts for the environment.
