Week One and Two in STEAM

We have had a terrific start to the term in STEAM. This term we are looking at where our food comes from.

The Preps, Grade Ones and Grade Twos began looking at our Play World's story called Tayta’s Secret Ingredient by Amal Abu-Eid and Cara King. They looked at the importance of food, not only for nutrition in our daily lives, but the role it plays in important celebrations and rituals. They looked at food groups and participated in two different food sorting games. They also participated in an experiment where a celery stalk was split and the ends were placed into different colours of water.

The Grade Threes and Fours learned about the Australian guide to healthy eating, explored the food groups and looked at the importance of eating a variety of healthy food. They participated in some food classification games and created some fantastic food decorations for the STEAM room. They conducted an experiment looking at growing vegetables from scraps. They also conducted an experiment looking at the versatility of wheat and how different foods can be made from the exact same ingredients. The students compared roti bread and wafer crackers created from the same dough but cooked using different methods.

The Grade Fives showcased the designs that they created in their upcycled textiles challenge last term as a part of their sustainability unit. They also began work on their new unit looking at where our food comes from. They looked at food groups and the importance of getting nutrients from a variety of different sources. They looked at Australia's most produced crop, wheat, and its importance in Australian food production. They participated in an experiment comparing different food products made from wheat flour and water but prepared in different ways.
