As part of our Inquiry into the ways we are influenced by the media, the learners worked collaboratively to create short skits which demonstrated a positive “message” to audiences about ethical issues which people in the community may face. The students planned and wrote scripts which included dialogue, settings and stage directions.
After rehearsing their skits, the students used their iPads to film and edit their pieces, finally sharing their finished products with their peers for feedback and feedforward.
The learners worked effectively throughout the process, collaborating in their own time, as well as during class time to create short films of which they were very proud.
Reflections:
The moral of our skit was : Never change yourself to suit other people! (Adrisha)
We wanted to teach our audience to never judge a book by its cover. Making our skit was so much fun because we all collaborated so well. (Eyren)
Our skit was about standing up for yourself and others. It was fun to act and to use special effects when we were editing our film. (Amika)
We made an animation with our voiceovers. We chose to do this as it was really hard to act out the scene without mics to project our voices. (Ishaan)
During the Inquiry unit the students also examined the way in which gender bias and equality is portrayed in the media. As part of this investigation the students created a front page newspaper article about a female who has made a significant impact in the world. The students researched their chosen subject, taking detailed notes which were then incorporated into their own words in the form of a news item.
Reflections:
Olivia Rodrigo has impacted little girls and influenced them that the world is becoming a better place for young girls around the world who write songs and perform. (Emilia)
Marie Curie was the first woman to discover radium which has made a significant impact on the development of medical treatments for cancer. Sadly, she died of radioactive poisoning. (Vethum)
I chose Greta Thunberg because she fights for environmental sustainability and has presented her views to world leaders. (Kevon)
I chose Malala Yousafzai because she fought for girls’ education when the Taliban didn’t allow girls to go to school. She kept trying and fighting even though she was badly injured. Now we celebrate Malala Day on July 12 every year because she won a Nobel Peace prize at the age of 17. (Kimaya)
I chose Kamala Harris regarding her encouragement towards females in leadership roles. She is now running for President of USA. (Stuti)
Financial Mathematics Project: Creating a Financial Plan for a World Trip
We had to pick a place to go. It was a great collaborative task. We first assigned our jobs because we wanted to finish the task on time. I had a lot of fun making the poster with my friends. Even though this was a maths task, it was interesting doing the calculations for our financial plan.
We picked Paris as a place to visit. We were very lucky because we had 4 people in our group so we had $80,000.00 altogether to spend. We first brainstormed all the information on a scrap piece of paper before doing the big poster. We had a few challenges which included: making sure we had enough money, convincing everyone to be on the same flight (some people in our group wanted to go in Business class), finding affordable hotels. We ended up getting an Airbnb. We had a lot of money left so we decided to make some adjustments to the prices and ratings to the hotels. Since we still had a lot of money left, we decided to give some to charity. I think this was one of the best maths sessions ever! It was very fun and enjoyable. I recommend it. 😊😊-Kimaya-😊😊
