Drama Incursion - Thursday, 5th August 2024
What a fantastic day we had yesterday with Tamara White from O’Grady Drama Melbourne Southeast! Our Year Six students were fully immersed in the thrilling world of drama, exploring the art of character development and performance.
The adventure began with a lively PowerPoint presentation on the "Elements of a Character," setting the stage for a day of dramatic fun. Students kicked things off with some energising icebreakers, diving into the physicality and movement of different characters, and even enjoyed a hilarious round of character charades!
In Activity 1, students were divided into small groups and challenged to create a character backstory using a quirky prop as their muse. Each group got a unique prop and a handy template to guide their brainstorming. From a tennis-loving animal from North Carolina with a penchant for ancient cereals to other imaginative creations, the room buzzed with creative energy as students developed their distinctive characters.
Activity 2 shifted gears to script work. Students teamed up to perform mini scripts, integrating their character backstories into engaging performances. Picture this: a pirate and a parrot arguing over who gets the biggest bed in a haunted house, only to scream in unison, “IT’S HAUNTED!”—pure drama magic!
We wrapped up with a fun and reflective Postcards Game where students acted out scenes and shared their experiences.
Looking ahead, the Year 6 team is excited to explore a follow-up project where students could rehearse, film, and edit their own short films using the mini scripts provided by Tamara. We’re considering a mini ‘film festival’ with categories like People’s Choice, Best Animation, Best Acting, and more. We’ll be using Student Voice to shape this project, making sure it reflects their interests and ideas.
Check out the student quotes and photos from this fantastic experience. It’s clear that our students had a blast bringing their characters to life and diving into the world of drama! We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Tamara and her team for delivering such an amazing experience to our students.
Thank you,
