Sun Smart at BEPS
SunSmart at BEPS
As BEPS is a Sun Smart school, there are some steps the BEPS community can participate in for maximum protection during outdoor learning:
How to be SunSmart
By following 5 simple 'sun protection' steps when the UV index is above 3, you can reduce your risk of skin cancer.
1. Slip on lightweight covering clothing
Choose lightweight clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Cotton and linen materials are lightweight, cool to wear and when tightly woven can protect against 95% of UV radiation. Be aware darker colours absorb more UV radiation.
2. Slop on SPF 30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen
Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to clean, dry skin at least 20 minutes before you go outside. Layer sunscreen onto exposed skin rather than rubbing it in. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming, towel drying or excessive sweating. Remember, sunscreen is not a suit of armour and should be used with other sun protection measures.
3. Slap on a hat (Between September and April at BEPS)
Choose, a broad-brimmed, legionnaire (with a flap that covers the back of the neck) or bucket style hat which shades your face, nose, neck and ears. Caps and visors do not provide enough protection.
4. Seek shade
Use trees or built shade structures. Shade reduces UV radiation, but it can still reach you via reflection, so make sure you use shade in combination with other sun protection measures. Ensure when using shade it casts a dark shadow.
5. Slide on some sunglasses
Sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat worn together can reduce UV radiation exposure to the eyes by up to 98%. Sunglasses should be worn outside during daylight hours. Choose close-fitting wrap-around sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard AS/NSZ 1067.
