College Assembly Guest Speaker - Careers in IT - Dr Kathleen Keogh
On Tuesday 27 August, Dr Kathleen Keogh provided a brief presentation at the College Assembly.
Primarily this presentation related to Kathleen’s career journey and the opportunities in IT related careers.
Kathleen grew up in regional Queensland and in Year 12 studied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, and Geometrical drawing. Her favourite subjects at school were Maths, English and French
Following Year 12 she went on to complete a Bachelor of Science (with Honours) at James Cook University, Townsville with majors in Maths and Computer Science.
Following graduation, Kathleen landed work as a software engineer, but after a few years was seeking more people interaction, so returned to study Teaching at University of Melbourne. She secured work as a Tutor, traveled and eventually completed her Masters while working. She had some career breaks for family, then moved to working at University of Ballarat – now Federation University. Kathleen completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne part time whilst working as a lecturer in Ballarat. She now lectures and looks after the Bachelor of IT Professional Practice at Federation University. In particular, she gets to work with industry and students, lecture and also do some research.
Kathleen talked about some of the research she is currently involved in relating to children’s literacy and autonomous drone technology in cluttered environments.
Kathleen outlined the reasons for studying IT might include improving lives, applications across a broad range of industries and very strong employment opportunities. She also mentioned that careers in IT are quite broad and diverse. Working with large corporates, small start-ups and medium enterprises. The types of roles are quite variable. The workplaces are also generally hybrid with a mix of home and office work. She referenced the role of a Scrum Master and also the ACS Foundation’s Career Wheel and Map (available here).
Kathleen went on to talk about Federation University as a coop university, which means that Fed Uni work closely with industry to cooperatively design, develop and deliver our courses. Paid placement is a feature of these courses – Bachelor of IT and Bachelor of IT (Professional Practice). And students can major in software engineering, AI and data science, business analysis, cybersecurity and mainframe systems. She provided two student examples and also mentioned Fed Uni’s upcoming, on-campus Experience Days at Gippsland (October) - see Events section for details.
Students interested in obtaining a copy of Kathleen's presentation or the resources she provided relating to Federation course information and ICT Careers should call into the Career Office (Jericho 9).
We are grateful to Kathleen for sharing her career journey and wealth of experience in the area of careers in IT.
