As technology becomes a bigger part of our daily lives, it’s important that students learn how to stay safe and responsible online. At school, we teach students about cybersafe through age-appropriate lessons and discussions, but families also play a vital role in supporting safe online habits at home.
Here are some key tips to help keep children safe online:
Encourage children to avoid sharing personal details like their full name, address, school name, or phone number online - especially in games, chats, or social media.
Help your child create strong passwords and remind them not to share them with anyone except trusted adults.
Remind children that the same rules of kindness and respect apply online as they do in person. If they wouldn’t say it face-to-face, they shouldn’t post it online.
Keep communication open. Encourage your child to talk to you if they see something online that makes them feel uncomfortable or unsure.
Create clear rules around screen time, the types of websites and apps they can use, and when devices should be turned off - especially before bed.
Take time to explore the apps, games, and websites your child uses. Many platforms have parental controls that can help manage content and interactions.
