Managing Screen Time at Home

Screens can be a wonderful part of our children’s lives; they help them learn, create and connect. But let’s be honest, managing screen time at home isn’t always easy!

It can help to pause and reflect on a few simple questions:

  • Do we have a plan in place for managing screen time?
  • Does screen use sometimes get in the way of family routines or sleep?
  • Can my child move easily between screen and non-screen activities?

If these questions make you stop and think, you’re definitely not alone. Most families find it tricky to find the right balance. The good news is that with a few clear boundaries and open conversations, screens can fit into family life in a healthy and positive way.

Savvy Parenting in a Digital World

Instead of banning devices altogether, try creating a family technology plan that everyone has a say in. When children help set the boundaries, they’re more likely to understand and respect them.

Here are a few tips that can make a real difference:

  • Avoid screens before bed and first thing in the morning. This helps kids wind down and start the day calmly.
  • Break up long stretches of screen time with other activities; a walk, a board game, or simply some outdoor play.
  • Encourage variety. Explore new apps, games or shows that are creative, educational or social.
  • Keep devices in shared spaces so screen use is open and easy to monitor.
  • Set clear expectations around chores, homework and family time.

Use screens together. Watching a show or playing a game side-by-side can open the door to great conversations about what your child enjoys online. Ask questions, listen, and share your own thoughts. This builds trust and helps children learn to think critically about what they see and do.

Parental controls can help, but nothing beats communication. Kids learn most when they practise making responsible choices with your support and guidance.

Focus on quality, not just quantity. Think about what your child is doing online, who they’re connecting with, and how it makes them feel.

Be a role model. Our kids notice how we use technology too! Try to model balance; take breaks from your phone, talk about what you’re using it for, and show that screens can be helpful tools rather than constant companions.
