SSV Year 8 Boys Badminton State Championships

On Friday 12th September BHS took our Year 8 Boys Badminton team to the SSV Year 8 Boys Badminton State Championships at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre (MSAC). This team have returned to the State Championships after qualifying in 2024 in the Year 7 Boys competition. This championship brings together the 8 best SSV teams to decide the SSV State Championships.

BHS were drawn into Pool B alongside Bendigo South East College, Grace Community College Wodonga and University High School. Alamanda K-9 College, Kambrya College, East Doncaster Secondary College and Foster Secondary College made up Pool A. The SSV State Championships can be a tough battle, especially in the badminton. The team went down 0 sets to 6 sets in all three of their matches but the students had a great time playing against some of the state's best players.

In a silver lining, the team won the schools third Spirit in Sport award awarded to the school who demonstrates the best sportsmanship over the competition.

Students involved: Jay Kanthiya, Sam Murray, Kyle Pelicano, Cooper Wallis

Coach: Paul Natoli, Alex Gladman (Year 8)

SSV Eureka Year 7 & 8 Basketball

On Friday 12th September BHS entered 4 teams into the SSV Eureka Year 7 & 8 Basketball competition at the Selkirk Stadium, Ballarat.

It was certainly a day of heartbreak for the school going down in three separate grand finals!

The Year 8 Boys competition had 11 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Mount Clear College (23pts to 9pts), Mount Rowan Secondary College A team (29pts to 11pts), Phoenix Secondary College B team (16pts to 0pts) and Woodmans Hill Secondary College (38pts to 16pts). Beaufort Secondary College A team, Beaufort Secondary College B team, Daylesford Secondary College A team, Phoenix Secondary College A team, Mount Rowan Secondary College B team and Daylesford Secondary College B team made up Pool B.

4 wins secured the team a position in the Semi Final against Daylesford Secondary College A team (28pts to 6pts) which ended up being a straightforward win and progressed the team to the Grand Final against the Phoenix Secondary College A team. It was a close tussle between the schools, but the team went down 18pts to 29pts to finish runner up for the competition.

The Year 8 Girls competition had 7 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Beaufort Secondary College (26pts to 0pts), Mount Rowan Secondary College (19pts to 8pts) and Phoenix Secondary College (19pts to 0pts). Daylesford Secondary College A team, Daylesford Secondary College B team and Mount Clear College made up Pool B. 3 wins secured the team a position in the Semi Final against the Daylesford Secondary College A team which they convincingly defeated 27pts to 10pts, and a place in the Grand Final against Mount Clear College. It was agonisingly close the whole way through only for Mount Clear College to score the final basket in the remaining seconds to snatch victory away from BHS. The team had finished runner up for the competition.

The Year 7 Boys competition had 6 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Mount Rowan Secondary College B team (42pts to 2pts) and Phoenix Secondary College (35pts to 9pts). Mount Clear College, Mount Rowan Secondary College A team and Woodmans Hill Secondary College made up the other pool.

Two comprehensive wins secured the team a position in the Semi Final against Mount Clear College (28pts to 16pts) which they went on to win and progress to the Grand Final, Mount Rowan Secondary College won the other semi-final to make up the second position in the final. Like all the other Grand Finals today it was a close affair but the side went down 17pts to 20pts and finished runner up for the competition.

Finally, the Year 7 Girls had a round robin competition against 4 other schools and progressed to the Grand Final. The team played Phoenix Secondary College (19pts to 6pts), Mount Clear College (25pts to 10pts), Beaufort Secondary College (31pts to 11pts) and Mount Rowan Secondary College (33pts to 4pts). Having won all their matches, the team booked a spot in the Grand Final and rematch against Phoenix Secondary. The team had the game on their terms controlling the match all the way to the end of the game winning the match 15pts to 7pts. The Year 7 Girls team are the Eureka champions for 2025!

The school also had 11 students umpire at the event which was a fantastic opportunity for our students to get involved in the SSV competition other than being a competing student.

The Year 7 Girls team will now progress to the SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 Girls Basketball competition on Thursday 6th November at the Selkrik Stadium, Ballarat.

SSV State Year 7 Boys Netball

On Monday 15th September the BHS Year 7 Boys Netball team qualified for the SSV State Year 7 Boys Netball Championships at the Glen Waverly Netball Centre.

It was an earlier start for the team making a move at 6:30am for the long drive out to Waverly!

The Year 7 Boys team drew Pool B alongside Rochester Secondar College (16 goals to 9 goals), Catholic College Wodonga (4 goals to 17 goals) and Macleod College (15 goals to 14 goals). Belmont High School, Dromana Secondary College, Blackburn High School and Maru MacKillop Leongatha made up the Pool A.

Two wins was enough to qualify for the Semi Final portion of the competition against Blackburn High School. It wasn’t the result the team was looking for being beaten 4 goals to 20 goals when Blackburn got out to a quick large lead which BHS couldn’t chase down. The team had finished in 4th place for the competition.

Head Coach Debra Hutchinson was full of praise for the team indicating there was much potential for this team of students going forward into boys' netball in 2026.

SSV Senior State Basketball Championships

On Thursday 18th September BHS took our Senior Boys & Senior Girls Basketball teams to the SSV Senior Basketball Championships at the Melbourne Sports Centre, Parkville. This championship brings together the 8 best SSV teams to decide the SSV State Champion.

The Senior Girls have made back to back State Finals and the Boys team might be the first team in SSV history to come runner up at Division and Region level to qualify for a State championship after both winners withdrew!

It was a great opportunity for both teams to play against some quality opposition before they fly out to the Gold Coast in December for the National Schools Basketball Championships.

The BHS Girls team played the first match of the game resulting in the team needing to leave Ballarat at 6:00am!

The Senior Boys were drawn into Pool B alongside Catherine McAuley College (34pts to 37pts), Galen College Wangaratta (35pts to 40pts) and Sacred Heart Kyneton (32pts to 60pts). Western Heights College, Bentleigh Secondary College, Templestowe College and Lowanna College made up Pool A. With so many close loses and student unavailability due to injury it was a competition of what could have been for the Senior Boys team. The team finished in 8th position for the competition.

The Senior Girls were drawn into Pool B alongside Catherine McAuley College (23pts to 43pts), Western Heights College (19pts to 39pts) and Northcote High School (36pts to 14pts). Maribyrnong College, Albert Park Secondary College, Box Hill Senior Secondary College and Bass Coast College made up Pool A. With one win the team didn’t have enough victories to secure a place in the Grand Final. The team finished in 5th place for the competition.

Senior Boys: Jesse Baker, Floyd Brooks, Noah Cummins, Jacob Hutchinson, Hamish Marshall, Hamish Mathison, Jackson Obrien

Coach: Debra Hutchinson
