Spotlight on Arts & Technologies
Head of Arts & Technologies - Nicole Bradford

Creativity lies at the heart of all that we do in the Arts and Technology faculty. Creative thinking encourages our students to approach problems from new angles and develop innovative solutions. It inspires curiosity and adaptability, which are essential for success in both academic and real-world situations. Our dedicated and experienced teachers foster learning experiences that ignite creative thinking and ideas, and encourage our students to resolve these with critical thinking. By doing this, we are preparing our students for a modern world that values innovation, collaboration and diverse forms of expression.
We have much to be proud of so far this year. Our Year 12 results remain high with students very well prepared for their upcoming external exams. We wish them well! Year 11 students are embarking on IA1 assessment, and it is pleasing to hear staff talk about the positive way students are actioning feedback to improve their learning and results. In Year 8-10 students are busy in their final unit for the year, and our Year 7 students are enjoying their introductory unit.
Year 12 Arts & Technologies Classes

Our students have been very fortunate to take their learning outside the classroom this year. Year 11 Design students visited 1 ANZAC Square where the Property manager explained the sustainable design and practices of the building. This was a perfect example of the theory behind Commercial Design which has prepared the girls for their Unit 2 project on the redesign building usage here at Mt A. Year 11 Visual Art students visited St Helena Island for their stimulus experience to create a strong foundation for their body of work.

They also met the curator of the Children’s Hospital gaining an understanding of purposeful art and its link to wellbeing. Year 10 Visual Art students had an action packed day encompassing GOMA, the Griffith Museum, and a private tour of the University’s student artist studios. In Year 9, our Design students walked to our local Vinnie’s to gather the basic materials needed to design and make a sustainable fabric wrap. These experiences have allowed our students to see how their creative thinking can be used in industry.
In Food and Nutrition our Year 11 students are currently exploring ‘Food Science of Fat’ and experimenting the different outcomes of fat in cooking in regards to sensory profiling as well as role of fat in emulsions through making of salad dressings. They are expanding their knowledge in the area of fat nutritionally as well as health impacts. Mrs Popplewell is delivering some exciting learning activities which are preparing the class for their upcoming IA1 assessment. In Year 9 our Food Technology students are busy designing, executing and evaluating new menu items for a Brisbane Food Truck. Students are using their knowledge of the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and allergies/ food intolerances to create some very exciting food products.
Our Drama students are always engaging in exciting and meaningful activities. Year 7's are exploring the elements of Drama and are building teamwork skills through improvisation and fun Drama games. They begin work on their Children's Theatre Performance this week. Year 9's have almost finished reading April Aardvark, a magical realism play and they will soon choose scenes to perform and create media to enhance their performance which also forms part of their studies on Cinematic Theatre.
The students in Digital Technologies are exploring ways the world is a better place thanks to the use of digital devices, digitally enhanced products and new ideas formed to meet the ever-changing demands of a complex and changing world. Year 7s are creating new arcade games using microprocessors, year 8s are designing, building and programming robots for entertainment and competitions, years 9-11 are producing web applications to help people access Brisbane City Council Services in an intuitive and efficient way.
Last Thursday evening Ms Bradford and Ms O’Leary excitedly attended CGen where three of our students Maddie, Natalia and Abby showcased their work alongside high achieving Brisbane students. Congratulations to Abby who was awarded a Commendation for excellence in Visual Arts.
Last Friday evening celebrated the talents of our many students and staff at our annual art show, Arti. If you were lucky enough to visit, I am sure that you will agree that the level of work displayed was outstanding. There was a wonderful creative buzz and thank everyone who assisted with the event and those who visited.
Wishing all of our student the very best in their upcoming assessments.
