Foundation Learning Itinerary

2025 LEARNING ITINERARY

What are we learning in Foundation?

The School Wide Key Understanding we are exploring this term is;

Sharing stories helps us learn and connect to ourselves, people and places.

Our third Big Idea linked to this understanding is;

We share our stories.

We expect this portion of our Inquiry to go for approximately 3 weeks.

We have broken down this Big Idea into four key stages. These stages are;

  1. I have a family.

       2. My family is made up of different people.

       3. Family groups have similarities and differences.

       4. My family has changed over time.

We will share our Big Idea exploration as part of the whole school Story Telling Festival during Week 4 of Term 4.

To enhance this portion of our Inquiry, in English we will explore these texts;

Maybe Something Beautiful by Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell -

(Picture Story Book)

Ish - by Peter H. Reynolds (Picture Story Book)

The Show (Bluey episode)

The English concepts that we will explore through these texts are;

  1. Punctuation.
  2. Text Types.

The Maths concepts that we will explore through this Big Idea are;

Students will be identifying and comparing the mass of objects, using direct comparisons and communicating their reasoning.

We are continuing our whole school Wellbeing program called RRRR: Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships. The program teaches social and emotional learning and respectful relationships. Our focus is Problem Solving.

The main Wellbeing concept that we are exploring is:

Inclusive decision making

Towards the end of this Inquiry, we will communicate with families about our next Big Idea. As we encourage students to be agents of their own learning, we remain flexible on pacing which means our Inquiry may move faster than originally planned, or may require more time with one or more concepts.

To support your child's learning in English we encourage reading from a wide range of sources at home or visit your local library. To further support your child’s learning you could write some short statements or questions on paper, and ask your child which kind of punctuation (full stop, question mark, exclamation mark) belongs at the end. It may also be beneficial to discuss any favourite songs, TV shows, films, books or comics and what makes them great!

To support your child's learning in the Math concept outlined, you may like to investigate the mass of objects by exploring hefting and using scales. It may be fun to make your own scales using a coat hanger and two small paper cups tied at either end.  It may also be interesting to examine large, light objects and small, heavy objects in and around the home, park, and so forth.

If you have any questions about this Inquiry, or you have any skills, resources, experiences or talents that may help us as we explore the concepts, please contact your classroom teacher. If you have any craft supplies or materials to donate please leave them in the donation drawers at Stela’s entrance doorway.

Formal assessment will be communicated through Semester reports at the end of the semester.

With kindness,

Foundation Team
