CLASSROOM NEWS!

Prep/1 News
The Prep/1 classroom has been full of energy and smiles this term! From creative writing and place value games to hands-on science fun, students have been curious, engaged, and eager to learn.
In Literacy, our Prep students have been sorting sentence fragments and using their creativity to colour matching pictures , such as “found she a bug blue.” Our Grade 1 students have been extending their writing by building compound and complex sentences, using conjunctions like but, so and because. Everyone has been busy writing weekly recounts, sharing some very entertaining holiday stories on our first day back!
In Math's, we’ve been exploring whole numbers and place value, focusing on tens and ones. Students loved our silly story about the ice-cream van crash and counted all the “paddle pop sticks” it left behind! We’ve also enjoyed fish bowl place value games and Place Value Bingo to practice building and reading two-digit numbers.
In Science, students are learning about push and pull forces. They’ve acted out different movements and used hands-on materials like play dough to explore how forces work in everyday life.
Our Grade 1 students have been reading Today 'We Have No Plans', while our Preps have enjoyed 'My Two Blankets'. We’ve also welcomed two new classmates this term, and the class has embraced them with open arms.
2/3 News
What an awesome start to term 4! The grade 2/3s have loved seeing the 3 new peregrine falcon chicks from the Collins 467 live stream, which hatched over the holidays. If you would like to watch at home, click here. (Note: The chicks are adorable, but seeing their carnivorous diet in action is a little bit gross!)
In Literacy, our group have been enjoying applying our comprehension skill of 'monitoring' to both our partner reading books, and to our storybook, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. How do we monitor when we read?
Fix means we might research or ask about unknown vocabulary, re-read the text we've just read, or read on to gather further information. Try it at home to build comprehension of the texts you read, which could even be a TV show or movie!
Speaking of partner reading, the 2/3 group have loved getting stuck into their new novels, including The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches and a new book by Australian author Nathan Luff, Jungle Escape.
We've also been focusing on words ending in 'le' such as jungle and sizzle, and we've been looking at tenses in depth in grammar. Do you know the past tense of bring and buy? What about take and sing? We are so fascinated by how so many verbs are SO different in past tense!
In Maths, our big focus has been fractions. We've looked at fractions of a collection (such as a bunch of counters), fractions of shapes, and fractions of lengths. We've used tools to measure and then estimate our fractions of lengths, such as a half or a quarter, and are learning to use a calculator to divide by the fraction (ie. half is divided by 2) to confirm or improve our estimations to be more accurate.
4/5/6 News
We settled back into school for our last Term, and we hit the ground running.
Literacy –Miss Childs’ class have been practicing fluency reading. We are currently reading through some little skits. We are also learning new vocabulary and adding these new words to our word wall, located on the back wall in our room. If you get a chance, pop in and have a look.
Mrs. Clarke's class have just finished reading Charlotte's Web. We all thought the ending was pretty sad and happy too. During writing we have been writing poems to send off for the Australia Day Competition. It's theme is Australian Vegetation!
Numeracy – First week back, Miss Childs’ class have been practicing our multiplications, learning their multiplications is an important part of Mathematics, if you have a few spare minutes to help them practice, please do so. Even if you are in the car. Week 2 we have just started working on Shape Transformation, where we flip/reflect, slide/translate and turn/rotate the shapes.
In Mrs. Clarke's class, we have been learning how to do Octables to practice our times tables. This fortnight we are focusing on our 4s and 8s. We have also been looking at cross sections of 3D shapes and how learning how understanding cross sections in the real world can help mankind.
