Positive Classroom Management Strategies

At Seaford Park Primary School, we're consistently working to ensure a safe, predictable, and supportive learning environment for all our students. We've seen significant success with our Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Supports (SWPBS) and are now focusing on refining specific areas to further enhance our approach.

We utilise evidence-informed instructional practices to create safer and more purposeful learning spaces. Our guiding principle is that behaviour can be taught through explicit instruction and positive reinforcement. Therefore, we prioritise proactive teaching over punitive or reactive strategies.

This term, as we settle into the new school year, our focus is on refining classroom procedures and routines, particularly ‘transitions’. This includes the smooth entry and exit of classrooms, the efficient organisation of learning materials, movement between learning spaces, respectful conduct around the school, and orderly entry and exit of assemblies.

Our method involves:

  • Collaboratively defining student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Explicitly teaching students how to demonstrate these responsibilities.
  • Providing opportunities for practice and success.
  • Reinforcing student effort.
  • Reteaching when necessary.
  • Using visual reminders, like our Rights and Responsibilities posters, throughout the school.

These practices result in:

  • Increased predictability and structure within the classroom.
  • Improved student self-monitoring of behaviour.
  • A positive and collaborative school culture.
  • Reduced cognitive load through established routines.

By establishing clear routines, we free up students' working memory, allowing them to focus more effectively on learning. We are committed to providing an optimal learning environment for your children and value your ongoing support in this important work.
