Grade 6

It has been a busy few weeks in the Grade 6 area. The last two weeks have included an Incursion, some students acting as PMP assistants for the new Grade Preps, establishing places for teams in the upcoming Grade 5 & 6 interschool sports, and our captains receiving their badges!!
In addition to this, we’ve continued reading and delving into our novel study on Rivet Boy by Barbara Henderson. The students are engaged and listening attentively as the text is read aloud. This text is set in the late 1800’s and is centred on a boy called John who is left with no choice but to become the ‘breadwinner’ of his home to support his widowed Mother and younger sister.
This concept of ‘child labour’ has set the scene for our persuasive writing unit. Students have been exploring the facts that surround the world-wide problems of child labour and have been using their research to create strong arguments that oppose young children in the workforce.
In Maths, we have continued our focus on BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction), and the four operations. Problem solving skills through our “Rich Tasks’ and independent practice that is adjusted for their abilities, have scaffolded the students to solve equations that challenge them appropriately.
They are beginning to see the interconnectedness of the four operations and the need to work with numbers in an orderly way, whilst appreciating their place value.
The photos below are just a few examples of the fun and broad range of activities that your children are engaged in.
The ‘Simply Your Best’ incursion. Ran by NRL representatives.
This incursion was centred on children striving for their own, personal best, as opposed to ‘being the best’. This was likened to doing their best for their bodies, education and development by eating right, getting sufficient sleep and setting their own, personal goals for their education.
Just some of our wonderful captains receiving their leadership badges at the week 3 assembly.
AFL 9’s girls and boys teams- training and learning the skills of the game ahead of our interschool sport competitions.
Students showing great leadership skills as they support the PMP (Perceptual Motor Program) for our new Prep students.
